I've never heard of it, but your description sounds like a cleaver. We've been training DD with some easier to cut foods. For example, we let her use a paring knife to cut the tops off her strawberries (with supervision, of course).

i found~ http://www.kiddiefoodkutter.com/

but this isnt the one I'm thinking of.

This one is like the kind they have at natural stores to cut the bulk soap, dd used them at her Waldorf school.

I just read your description to DH and he said it sounded like a "scraper". I know what he means. Some people call it a bench knife and some call it a dough scraper. Is that what you're looking for? I'll see if I can find a link.

We have one of these but from Pampered Chef, and my dd LOVES it. She uses it all of the time.

My kids just use a regular paring knife.

I think this is different from what you're looking for, but we like the kid knives from Pampered Chef:

I looked up the one from Montessori Services:

I'd rather do that one. It's blunt on the end, but still a sharp knife. I want DD to expect that ALL knives are sharp and know how to handle them properly.

How about this one? It's also from a Montessori place.
