Knitting socks for dh

Have you ever knit a pair of socks for a man? If you were going to knit a pair of socks for a man with size 10 feet, and you were using size 2 needles and fingering weight yarn, how many stitches would you cast on? I'm thinking of trying 80 to start. Does this sound about right? I made a pair for myself (size 8 womens) using the same needles and yarn weight and I used 72 stiches. They were slightly loose (the way I like them). These are going to be for his work shoes so they should probably be more snug-- but not too tight.

Is there an easy way to make a gauge swatch for this??

This is the best sock pattern I've found when you've not knit for a person before.

No matter the actual pattern I'm making (stitch wise) I always use this one to start myself off

It really depends on the yarn and your personal gauge, for me being a loose knitter I CO 72 stitches for men socks. I am knitting a pair of socks for my husband with a size 10/11 foot on size 1US using Trekking yarn.

For my hubby's socks, I used size 1 needles, sock yarn, and cast on 72 stitches.
I must warn you!!! I'd never knitted him anything before and he was so pleased and excited about those 'amazing' socks- I was pregnant within a week. The socks weren't that amazing- it was self striping yarn.

My DH has size 10's and I loved the Gentleman's Plain Winter Sock from Knitting Vintage Socks. It has a nice fit and is for a man's 10-11 I do believe. It uses sock yarn and 1.5's (I think).
