eczema? allergies? help me MDC! :)

Short Version: I'd say around my son's first birthday I started with a little bit of itchy, rough skin on one finger. My son also started with some eczema on his right cheek. To make a long story short, here we are a year later and the eczema has spread and subsided many times. Overall it is worse now though. It is on all four fingers of my one hand and on the inside of both elbows. My son's is on the tops of his hands and down both forearms.

I'm going for allergy testing next month (for me) and am wondering what to expect.

Background:
I had some similar eczema issues as a child, but they seemed to come and go with the seasons. So it seemed to be a outdoor allergen as it was triggered only in the summer. I had allergy testing and came up with minor reactions to a few things, but the only thing that helped was I was put on steroids and it seemed to reset everything. All was fine until a year ago when it started up without any known reason.

I saw a dermatologist but that was completely useless. She gave me steriod cream of course. I used it because I was desperate and miserable. But after using it for 2 weeks, I stopped as recommended and it all came back. At the follow up they just recommended different steroids and I didn't bother using them.

I have gone to a naturopath and she felt that it was yeast and mold in the body and not an allergy at all. I did two rounds of herbal suppliments to deal with each issue. She also had me doing some other energy ballencing things. It worked a little bit, but nothing has worked long term. They also had a emotional detox effect... made me feel very depressed and out of control.
I should go back to her, but since I'm obviously paying for everything out of pocket I am going to try the medical route now since at least part of that is paid for.
We did have a minor mold problem in the house, but that has all been fixed so I'm not sure there is a connection.

So far I've tried:
prescription steriod cream
OTC hydrocortazone (it burned!!)
Several calendula preparations... Bioron seems to work the best
Pine Tar natural-cure-all stuff DH's aunt sent me
some homeopathic itch cream from the drugstore (I don't remember what it's called. It helped with the itch a little, but that's it)
Three Butter Lotion Bar very moisturizing and seemed to help the most
Taking EPO and Fish Oil internally

My conclusion is that something weird is going on internally and nothing I do externally is going to put a dent in this until I find the cause.

commments? suggestions?

TIA

Have you tried an elimination diet? That would be my first suggestion. There are a lot of different routes you could take (check out my blog).... you could eliminate just a few things- maybe dairy/soy/gluten... you could eliminate the top 8 allergens.... you could go full-scale elimination and cut out all foods that might cause inflammation or irritation, like nightshades, citrus, caffeine, sugars, preservatives/dyes, etc. Keep a detailed food journal with everything you eat and your symptoms, so that you can start looking for patterns.

It very well could have been a yeast problem, maybe triggered by pregnancy? The yeast problem (or any sort of good/bad gut bacteria imbalance) can cause gut damage, leading to leaky gut. Leaky gut leads to food allergies/intolerances, which can lead to other symptoms- digestive issues, skin issues (eczema), behavior issues, etc.

ITA that you need to work on this problem internally- external solutions will only mask symptoms, not cure them.

Also- if you can find your food (or environmental) triggers, chances are your LO will have the same triggers. So I would try doing an elimination diet yourself first, and then cutting foods that you suspect from his diet.

ack. I have been avoiding that darn elimination diet thing.

I did think that whatever I'm reacting too my LO is too so I figure I'll be the gunea pig. We don't eat a lot of dairy, but now that I think about it I do have cream in my coffee/tea most days. I know that there may have been a citrus reaction when I was a kid. So I might just start with a few things and move on from there. I think wheat would be the absolute hardest for me so I'm going to save that one for last.

Off to check out your blog....

You know, I thought wheat would be the hardest thing to give up, too. But DS tested allergic about 8 weeks ago, and we're doing OK. He's a lot better. Not completely cured (still has some itchy patches), but he also has environmental allergens, and they may be coming into play. ANd I had wheat-free pancakes for breakfast. It is possible.

Check out the "resources" sticky above and scroll down to the links about healing the gut and elimination diets. There are lots of informative threads there
