Books that make you cry...

I LOVE books that can move me, touch my soul and blow me way. If I cry, I know a book is good, and I looooove to have me a good cry!

So, what books make you cry? Or, more importantly - what books make you sob and wail and bawl like a little baby?

Barbara Kingslover "The Bean Trees" (I think that's the right title)

There are others but that was a real tear-jerker!

"Mr Pip" by Lloyd Jones and "Cold Mountain" by C. Frazier. But not as much as "The Bean Trees"

What about you OP?

Atonement, by Ian McEwan

House of Sand and Fog, by Andre Dubus

I know there are more, since I cry at the drop of a hat. But these were the first I thought of.

I cry at so many books!

Most recently it was A Prayer for Owen Meany that had me in tears.

Keep 'em coming!

Last books I cried reading - anything by Mitch Albom, The Da Vinci Code, HP and the Deathly Hallows. The last few I've read have fallen flat so I need some inspiration.

And I too cry so easily. Since having my children, I can cry at movie trailers.

I cry at books where the protagonist IS me. So, I'm not sure if that will translate to everyone else.

The most recent book that made me cry was Love the One You're With because I had been where the protagonist was and saw so much of myself in her.

It was kind of a fluffy book (not quite chick lit I guess) so YMMV.

El Presidente by Miguel Angel Astorias is a book that made me sob for a long time. It's not cathartic though it is complete dejection at human cruelty and a feeling of powerlessness to do anything about it. I wouldn't read it if you have baby, it might give you bad dreams. The image of the nursing mother is so moving.

I also have cried while reading nearly every Harry potter book which makes me feel like a big nerd for some reason

I haven't cried while reading a book in a very long time, but I will cry with certain songs and movies. I don't know why that is. I recently read On the Beach and it definitely had poignantly sad moments. I cried while reading Gone with the Wind, but that was years ago. I think I cried at the end of The Remains of the Day but that was a long time ago too.

We Were the Mulvaneys made me SOB. Of course, I was only a couple of weeks postpartum when I read it, but I found it just devastating. I think I cried at A Map of the World, too -- that's a great book, but depressing, it's not really a cathartic cry.

I didn't cry when I read The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Nighttime, but I found it profoundly moving. Come to think of it, the last paragraph might have made me choke up ...

"Old Yeller", "Where the Red Fern Grows", "Flowers for Algernon"

and I don't know why, but "Hope for the Flowers", I guess cuz its so hopeful and underscores the value/potential of everyone? Great book!

This makes me cry every single time I read it.

the first book that jumps to mind is YA (or maybe younger): Jacob Have I Loved. I think I've sobbed every time I've read that book, starting in 4th grade and continuing until 23rd grade (what? i'm not allowed to keep counting?).

Come Back: A Mother and Daughter's Journey Through Hell and Back by Claire Fontaine and Mia Fontaine

This book is a memoir and it just ripped my heart out...from both sides of the story, the mother and the daughter. My best friend read it and it made her cry, too.

The story is about the daughter's drug addiction and the family's journey to overcoming it.

Lots of really deep love and pain in this story...

The Best Day, The Worst Day by Donald Hall about the life and death of his wife, Jane Kenyon.

I was blubbering like a baby within the first 2 pages, and then throughout. And then I figured I should buy the book of poems he wrote after she died, called Without, um, yeah, bad idea, too much sadness. Way too much at once.

I haven't even finished the Best Day, the Worst day. I already know she dies, but I just don't want to get there quite yet.

Totally overdone, but The Notebook by Nicholas Sparks and Suzanne's Diary to Nicholas by James Patterson. I cried like a freaking baby (and, as always, the books are better than the movies).

The Good Earth, and Of Mice and Men. I cried for DAYS at both of these books.
