Books that make you cry... - Page 5

The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas really made me weap. And I hardly ever do that.

I've read The Kite Runner, A 1000 Splendid Sund, The Time Travellers Wife and The Book Thief w/o crying a tear to mention some that are mentioned already in this thread.
I was touched by all of the above, but I didn't cry.
But with The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas, I cried my eyes out, when I saw the movie as well.

(And then there's one more, but unless you know norwegian. )

I have to agree. I did not like that book at all. Booooring!

I'm going to reiterate my book suggestions from further up in the thread and the Khaled Hosseini books:

Talk Before Sleep - Elizabeth Berg
The Shack - William Young
The Kite Runner - Khaled Hosseini
A Thousand Splendid Suns - Khaled Hosseini

Oh YES, I'm a huge Hosseini fan! I wish he would write something else!

I actually started reading The Shack on a recent GS campout (I had finished Life of Pi and had nothing to read so another mom lent it to me for the night). I only got in about 40 pages, but it was enough to put in on "my list".

Sadly, we had baseball and swimming today so I haven't been to the library yet. Definitely tomorrow. I'll have to see about Talk Before Sleep (never heard of it).

I just read that last month. It didn't make me cry, but I did think it was a beautiful and moving book.

I love The Bean Trees! I always cry at the end of that, too. And boy, oh boy, every time I get to the end of A Raisin in the Sun with my students and have to make it through the last couple of pages without crying it's quite a feat!

I cryed at the end of Nineteen Minutes, too, but I disagree with the OP who said that tears=great book. I think Picoult is just OK, but happens to be really savvy at manipulating emotions.

I read The Brief Wondrous Life of Oscar Wao recently, and it was my first book cry in the past several years.

This is so, so true. I feel this way about Nicholas Sparks. I feel like his novels are specifically written to bring on tears - very shallow.

This book is a memoir and it just ripped my heart out...from both sides of the story, the mother and the daughter. My best friend read it and it made her cry, too.

The story is about the daughter's drug addiction and the family's journey to overcoming it.

Lots of really deep love and pain in this story...

Uh! This is such a good book. I couldn't put it down.

Others:
A long way gone (although this one was sooo sad I struggled to read throught it!)
The Lovely bones
Angela's Ashes

Actually I said "If I cry, I know a book is good." I'm not into books that try to make you cry. They feel cheap and contrived.

Anyhoo, going to the library tomorrow to return 5 books and find some more on my list (which currently has about 35 books on it). I think I may have to throw White Orleander on the list! Seems like a popular choice.

I love this thread, I'm amazed at the differing opinions - how one book can touch someone while another can toss it aside with a "meh." So interesting!

Oh man, I just read a book that made me actually SOB out loud while finishing it.

It's called Blood Ties by Jennifer Lash.

I don't think it was ever a very popular/mainstream book, and supposedly it was published posthumously and pushed by her sons, the Fiennes brothers (actors about whom I know very little).

Anyway, I picked it up at a thrift store, and really loved it. And cried (and cried and cried).

SO many! But the ones that stand out are A Prayer for Owen Meany (get teary just thinking about it!) Love Story, Hope for the Flowers, the Velveteen Rabbit and God Shaped Hole. That book just about killed me. But then, I *was* pregnant when I read it!

If you loved "The Kiterunner" and/or "A Thousand Splendid Suns", then you would probably enjoy Chris Cleave's "Little Bee". It's the story of a 16 y.o. Nigerian refugee in England.

The Time Travelers Wife by Audrey Niffenegger.

Bawled like a baby at the end.
