I am interested in my children and I learning basic Spanish the laziest way possible. I am picturing some sort of language CD that we can pop in and listen to day after day and just sort of absorb. The only CDs I can find come with books and you need to sit down and study along, which wouldn't work for us at all. Any suggestions?

This book feels good in your hands. The paper is heavyweight, and the illustrations flow perfectly.

There are countless programs for learning languages "in your car." I bought Dh one by Pimsleur and one by Michael Thomas, I think. I think they came with books, but they're not required for the program.

Rosetta Stone? Of course you have to interact with the computer, though. I have heard that people who even listen passively to language will acquire it. You would probably have to listen every day, though.

I'd think the only way to really learn it is to find a situation where you get practice speaking it. Maybe a Spanish speaking teen as babysitter?

My children and I have enjoyed simply listening to foreign language music. DD1 really likes french. Charlotte Diamond in particular. Then when we love a song we look up the lyrics translation. We've absorbed quite a bit b/c we love the music so much and listen to the same songs over and over and over. We aren't really gaining fluency, but the exposure is great. We've done some Spanish also, Russian (was a huge hit) and Chinese. Its fun!
