This new research just came out today and is being talked about in the news here.

Thoughts?

No one? I thought this was pretty significant/big news. I mean, I know that one study does not a certainty make but it's certainly interesting consideirng that type 1 has gone up in recent years, as have c-sections.

We care, we just werent up yet, lol!
While interesting, I thikn it's just one more thing that they will not give a darn about....we already know section babies are at risk for a number things....but will it reduce the number of C/S's?? nope. It will only make those who really try to avoid one and get one feel even crappier....

Now, in a truly life or death situation, is a higher chance of diabetes worth the risk? OF COURSE...but since to most docs, *ALL* the C/S's they do are "necesary", in their minds, it wont change how they operate. It might make one or 2 honest docs with a conscience think twice about reducing their C/S rate..but not most.

We'll see how long this takes to filter on over here to the US.

Are babies born by C-section more likely to be given formula? If so, perhaps that is part of the link? Studies have shown a correlation between early introduction of milk solids and type 1 diabetes. My son's at risk for juvenile diabetes (I have CD, they're genetically linked), so it was a huge reason for us to avoid introducing milk. I think studies currently show <3mo to be the critical age, but our ped wanted us to avoid as long as possible (12mo).

The study accounted for whether the babies were breastfed or not. They don't know how it works, but the thinking is that it relates to the lack of exposure to "normal" (eg. "vaginal", but why use that word?) bacteria immediately after birth.

Very interesting article. I just wish it would make a difference, but I doubt it will.
