For me it didn't hurt at all. We went really slow and made sure that no pressure was put on my stomach. Just relax and don't push yourself. If you aren't ready then it is more likely to hurt IMO.
The main issue can just be typical breastfeeding/pp dryness. I feel like a nut for always posting about this, but I recommend an oil, like olive oil much more than a commercial lube. That helps a lot!
