Florida Vax Info Needed

Thread Starter
My sister lives in Florida (Jacksonville) and just had twins 6 weeks ago at 36 weeks. She is very concerned about vaxing and I wanted to get her good advice about how to delay/refuse some of the vaccines based upon her state...what can she do if she wants some and not othes and it is hard to say for religious reasons you can get A, B, but not C...you know what I mean?? I do not vaccinate at all anymore as my child had a reaction, but she wants some but not others and wants them spaced out. If you live if Fla please either PM me or reply to this.

That is tricky - FL tends to be an all or nothing kinda state. You CAN decide NOT to vax any more even if you have given some already. But they don't really accept picking some and not others for their religious exemption.

Now, suppose you are just opposed to vax using fetal tissue - that CAN be grounds for refusing the ones with fetal tissue and getting all the ones that don't use it. But still it can be tricky.

First find an open minded ped who accepts patients who delay or selective vax. Then, she can work with her ped on a delayed schedule, get the ones that she is okay with. She is under care and the selective vax is part of a doctor approved treatment plan - so the state can NOT give her a hard time or try to charge her with neglect, etc. Schools and daycare will still require specific vax though and admission will be denied unless an exemption is filled out.

Now legally speaking, if she was fully or selectively vaxing and then had a religious epiphany and decided she was opposed to vax - then she could get a religious exemption for all future vax. Of course then she would be opposed to all future vax and boosters.

Biggest thing is to ask around and find a ped who is okay with delayed and selective vaxes. Someone who will work with you, not harass you or worse, report you to family services. This will atleast buy her some time until her child starts school - less time if she puts the babe in day care - but it is some time.

Here is a link to my experience getting an exemption - it was a horrible experience, but there are lots of great links and info in there! The KNOW website and their FL rep were fabulous resources to me.

You only "have" to vax or have an exemption if you are sending your child to school (or similar situation). You don't even need an exemption otherwise. DD is three with no exemption and no vax's. Our doctor would have been more than willing to selectively vax. He isn't even openminded on vaxs and recommends fully vaxxing and yet he is okay with us not vaxxing (he didn't ask us to sign anything and didn't drop us).

Besides, legally, as set in precedence in a Florida Supreme Court Case -- you can get a religious exemption just for asking for it. You are NOT required to give ANY religious affiliation or make any claim other than it is against your personal religious beliefs. No one is allowed to ask you what religion you belong to for example.

Honestly, I have never had a problem here

ETA: Naturegirl, you should definitely report what happened to you if you haven't already -- what that lady did was illegal and violated your civil rights.

WIC gave me a big stink for not vaxing, so I got the exemption form (from st. lucie HD) I had no problems at all.

If she is planning to selectively vax and is going to want an exemption for school or daycare, I would opt out of the Florida Shots program (the state records all of the vaxes given unless you opt out.) The opt out form is here.

I think it would look strange for her to get an exemption stating that she has a religious objection to all vaccinations, then have the state keep a record of the selective vaxes she gives to her kids. I haven't heard of anyone having problems because of that, but better safe than sorry.
