allergies after weaning?

Since I weaned my DS 2 months ago he has been showing signs of what I think may be a dairy allergy. Before weaning he could eat some organic yogurt and be fine. After I weaned he would throw it up. I put him on goats milk since I thought he couldn't have cow milk but he was waking at night screaming and kicking me and was inconsolable (before weaning he nursed every 2-3 hours at night.) He also had the allergy ring rash on his bum and some behavior issues (but he is 22 months so that could be the behavior issues.)

So now he is on soy milk and I took all dairy out of his diet (although he would occasionally get some chocolate candy or something else with a small amt. of dairy.) He has been sleeping good and the rash hasn't come back.

Last night he had a few homemade cookies that were made with real butter. He woke up screaming and kicking but went back to sleep quickly. At nap he did the same thing but would not go back to sleep. Now I just noticed his eyes are red and he has a runny nose. He has never even had a cold. Is it allergies if it only showed up after I weaned him or something else?

(I hope this makes sense. )

My dd's symptoms didn't really show up until she started nursing a lot less at about 2 1/2. I did notice very minor things before that so I was not giving her dairy except for yogurt. But once the nursing became much less frequent, all hell broke loose.

I think that sometimes a babe's damaged gut can manage to get by while they are still nursing for most of their calories, but once the digestive system has to take over breaking down all the proteins, it just proves to be too much and the cascade begins.

For now I would try to keep ALL dairy out of his system so it can heal. If you keep letting him have trace amounts his immune system will not have a chance to calm down and re-program itself, even if you are not seeing immediate visible reactions. It's pretty easy to find chocolate without dairy.

Thanks for the reply Joy!

I should add that I don't eat a lot of dairy because I will get a sinus infection if I do, but I can have a little bit (such as milk chocolate, or ice cream every few days) and it does not bother me. I guess I thought his problem was the same as mine so just no large amounts of dairy but after reading your post I will work on eliminating it all and hope that it helps.
Now, off to read the ingredient list on everything in the house.

There are lots of forms of dairy you'll miss if you don't visit a site that helps list them out...here are a couple...

Also, I would level the possibility that your "sinus infection" rxn to too much dairy might actually be your body's signs of an allergy or intolerance that YOU might have. Sorry, hope that isn't the case, just wanted to offer the idea.

My son's allergy really showed up after we weaned. He'd had ezcema forever it seemed like but that was his only symptom.

I'd watch soy milk though. A lot of kids with dairy issues also have soy issues.
