mantle of mold?

In a discussion of allergies at the park, a mama suggested that there is a mantle of mold (in the soil? beneath the soil?) in this region of the country (Ohio/midwest), and that a lot of people with mold allergies have a hard time because of this. Has anyone heard of this? Do you have any links or references for me to read?

DS is allergic to mold. This might explain why his eczema got better EVERY time we went away on a trip. We were hoping it was the mold in our apartment carpet, and we're building a house across the street - with hardwoods! - because of it. But, it may not make much difference if it is in the soil...

I haven't heard that, but there is definitely something out there! I didn't even know that I had allergies (environmental) until I moved to Ohio!! And then it was so bad... I was on just about every allergy medicine, I tried allergy shots twice (and I reacted too much to continue), even got nasal surgery because I could never breath out of my nose. (And BTW, I am REALLY sensitive to mold.)

Moved back out to the West, and my allergies are 1000% better. Every so often, if we have a really bad year, I will get a little bothered. But nothing like Ohio.
