MP3 help!!

Thread Starter
Sorry if I sound totally clueless here but I am. I just bought a cheap MP3 for my dd. I tried to use Napster to download songs but the player isn't compatible. Can I just download songs from them then somehow use Roxio to convert them? Does Roxio let you download on to an MP3 (My dad gave it to me a while ago, I've never really used it).

If not, are there any other services I can use? Is Amazon compatible with every MP3 player?

Thanks!

I am totally not a "techie" but what I've had to do is download songs, then burn them to a cd then upload them onto the MP3 player. There's got to be an easier way, so I hope someone in the know chimes in....

Most music services use DRM (Digital Rights Management) to control how many devices, whether it can be burned to CD, and how many computers the mp3 can reside on. If your device can't handle the DRM, then it won't play the mp3's:. The only service that I know of the distributes DRM-free mp3's is emusic. It's all indy music, which is fine for my tastes, but lacks a lot of commercial/pop music.

You can illegally convert DRM'ed mp3's via the burn to CD then rip method, or use a program like Audacity that will essentially record the mp3 while it's playing on your computer. Both of these processes are non-trivial and time consuming if you are trying to do more than one song.
