Anyone know of this? 18yo cousin just diagnosed with it. He is still in ICU. Very rare - 1 in 100,000. Can be triggered by in infection or MCV4 vaccine.

I refused it for my 16yr old because it is listed on the package insert as a possible reaction. My ped asked me about giving it to him and I asked to see the package insert I brought it home to read it and sure enough bottom of the back it says possible reacitons... Guillains Barre Syndrome.

Guillains Barre Syndrome can be a reaction of several vaccines...I'm sorry OP

Yes, I have an hs aquaintance who believes she got Guillen Barre from a vaccine. She was paralyzed from the neck down and is recovering. She now has use of her arms and legs but still has limitations in her legs. I'm so sorry for your cousin. *hugs*

I'm so sorry.

My friend's father has GBS. It can be life changing for sure.

An elderly relative got it. I don't know if she had a flu vax that year or not.

She became paralyzed from the neck down, and had to breathe with a ventilator. Over the course of a year, she did make a full recovery, however.

Do you know what some of the other vaccines are? I just read about the MCV4 online. He was only diagnosed last night after 3 days on respirator in ICU so there is a lot we don't know yet....

Guillain Barre Syndrome

Influenza, Tetnus-Dipheria (Td), Tdap, Gardisal, MMR, HIB, Hep B, Polio (IPOL), Varicella (CP), MMR + CP combo, Pediatrix (DTP, hep B and Polio combined), DT shot for use in peds only.....there are TONS of them that have this as a reaction. You can find a lot from this link

I just found out that someone I know has this. She's a 30-ish mother of two, and I'm sure she hasn't gotten vaccines recently. What else causes it?

Might she have got a flu vax?

Any kind of viral infection can trigger it.

My brother was a victim of this disease. He was diagnosed at 4, and is going strong at 21. He was told he'd never walk again, but he played varsity baseball in high school and is doing great. The whole ordeal was heartbreaking, though, and I was just a child myself when he went through it. I'm so sorry to your cousin. Let me know if there's anything I can help you with. There are several "celebrities" with GB...one is a college basketball coach, and one is/was a nascar driver.

Some sites claim that GBS is what FDR had in reality. He was diagnosed at age 39 which is alittle old for polio. Or was it Epstein Barr?

I didn't see your post in H&H so I'll respond here.

I just lost a friend a couple of weeks ago to Guillain Barre Syndrome. Great guy, one of the smartest, most fun, and generous guys you'd ever meet. Didn't have a clue he was THAT sick. He was in and out of the hospital for a few months, for a "virus" he claimed. I was worried sick that he'd contracted HIV (I wasn't the only one who thought that he was great .)

Then his liver and kidneys failed. Then he was gone. I found out what happened at his memorial service.

I doubt that he'd had any vaccinations recently- he was 42 when he died. It was just one of those things.

(miss ya, R!)

Update on condition: Sad and scary for an 18 yo who was supposed to start college last week. Still critical and will be in ICU for another 10 days. Will then have to go to rehab cos he cannot move arms, legs. He is off ventilator so that is good news.
I do not know if he received a vaccine this summer b4 going to college. From the responses I received here, seems there are more cases than reported. Here's an article from VAERS that completely downplays the seriousness of GBS
http://www.fda.gov/cber/safety/gbs102006.htm
Hoping the link works.

I just found out he got 2 shots in June but his Dad did not know what they were.....

Thanks for posting that link. I'm going to save it to show my mom and brother. It really makes me sad, because I've been there, I was a child, but I saw how awful the disease was.

On a positive note, my brother is becoming more and more anti-vaccine because of what he's learning due to this (obviously since he's a survivor, anything involving GBS interests him). I just hate to see the gov't say "oh, well GBS isn't a big deal, everyone recovers (so not true, by the way), and meningitis is much worse." Why oh why oh why can they not see that they're causing harm? I can't figure out WHY they can't admit they're wrong sometimes.

My brother's father had this last summer. It was really scary for him. He had some very down moments, that's for sure. Over the last year, though, he has made a full recovery.
