The post about a great sitter in Bklyn made me think to post this year. I'm going a little out of my mind. I have a 9 year old, very easygoing daughter. Until last year, we lived her whole life in Manhattan and finding casual one-off sitters or for a regular night each week was a breeze. We were up the street from Barnard babysitting and had some great sitters from there. Or there was craig's list and there were tons of young people and college students looking for occasional sitting jobs.
Now we've moved to the Bronx and it's been almost a year and I don't have a single sitter I can call. I've tried looking on Craig's List but it seems like everyone up here is looking for an actual nanny job or does childcare in their home or is older with kids themselves and looking for afternoon or early evening jobs. (When we need a sitter we typically need someone til midnight or so or even later). There just don't seem to be the young, student, looking for extra money people willing to work one-off jobs. My daughter at this stage really just needs someone to be here - she's so independent and able to entertain and care for herself but not old enough to be left alone. This shouldn't be so hard, but it is. The result is I end up taking her to everything with me and relying on sleepovers at her friend's or my mom's but if that's not available I just have to pass stuff up. Any suggestions?
