Talk to me about the rotavirus vax.

When ds was an infant it wasn't even offered, so I know very little about it. I work at a daycare, in the infant room so I hear now and then about what vax's the babies are getting. About 2 weeks ago one of our youngest (almost 3 months old) got the rotavirus vax. Since then the kid poops CONSTANTLY. I know, babies poop. I get that, I've done this childcare thing for awhile now But it's not normal baby poop. The baby doesn't ever have just wet diapers, there's always poop. At least once an hour, usually more like every 30-45 minutes he's poopy. If I remember correctly, the rotavirus vax is a live one? Could this baby have rotavirus? The mom called the dr last week who said that it's fine that the baby is pooping this much, but if it's not better by this Thursday to call back. The dr also told mom that there was no need to keep baby out of daycare, as it wasn't contagious because baby doesn't have a fever. Is this true?

You're right the rotavirus is a live vax so it can shed. The virus causes diarrhea-like poop. That is probably why this baby is pooping so much.

I don't know about transmition myself so I'll leave that to someone else. I thought it could be transmitted via the poop but I'm not sure.

My daughter had a poopy diaper at every change until she was about 6 months old. My son only pooped now and then. My new daughter is another every time you change there is pooper.

Rotavirus vax can shed into the poop of a babe who has had the vaccine recently (i think the shedding is like for 4 weeks or something? sometimes shorter sometimes longer). The best thing to do is just practice sanitary action when you are the one changing the babe.

My understanding is that Roto doesn't normally last more than two weeks, so if it is Roto the baby should be starting to get better fairly quickly. I think it's bunk that if there is no fever then it isn't the virus. People react to viruses differently. Just because there is no fever, the dr. can't prove that it isn't Roto unless they specifically test for it.

I think we may actually have it going through our house now. DS has had a few tummy bugs, and I always wonder if it's from a daycare kid that was recently vaxed with Roto. Other kids in his daycare have it too right now. Although I'm sure there are plenty of bugs that cause tummy issues for a week or two, but Roto is pretty common.

Iirc, it's a live virus vax, and sheds like crazy. I wouldn't be surprised if you end up with a lot of poopy babies around there pretty soon, even with good sanitation practices.

Also, the last iteration of this vax was recalled due to killing babies from intusseption (sp?). I don't think this one's been out long enough to know. I guess it's a good thing that he's pooping so much, considering the alternative.

The new one was linked to a lot of pnemonia (sp?) during the vax trials but was still approved. There were articles in a lot of mainstream sources like MSNBC.com
