New to Kansas City

Thread Starter
My husband and I have recently moved to Kansas City form Atlanta with our 10 month old daughter. I am looking for advise on anything and everything from the best places to grocery shop to playgroups and local cloth diapering events (if such things exist). I have been very active in LLL and other meetings in Atlanta and would like to do so in Kansas City as well. We live in the Plaza area. Any help is greatly appreciated!

I live North so don't have a ton of info for you but have a few thoughts.

There is a store in Lee's Summit called Happybottomus that is a good resource for natural parenting stuff. They have a diaper exchange coming up on Saturday. More info here: http://www.happybottomus.com/

For markets, there is a Brookside market and a Westport-ish market, as well as others in other areas. More info here:http://www.kcfoodcircle.org/ The City Market is great fun on Saturday mornings too, but you do need to ask the vendors about their practices if you want strictly local or organic.

There are a bunch of different LLL groups at different times all over the city. I would check the LLL web site to find the one best for you.

Welcome to KC, mama!

I also am new to the KC area and live just south of the Plaza. I do most my shopping at The Market in the Brookside shopping center or at Whole Foods Market in Overland Park (91st and Metcalf). The Market carries a good selection of organic foods, but Whole Foods has the health care products I use and a great grass fed and free range meat supply.

Happybottomus is a great store for cloth diapering and that's also where the only local chapter of Holistic Mom's Network meets on Thursday nights once a month.

i just moved from Brookside, much to my chagrin, but I loved the LLL there. They meet at the Lutheran church near 55th (somewhere in the 50s) and Brookside Blvd. The Plaza library also has some good story times. I really enjoyed walking around my neighborhood when it's warmer or strolling around the Plaza. There's a Wild Oats on Main north of the Plaza. I did most of my shopping at Price Chopper on 63rd as it's cheaper than Brookside Market, but BM does have a lot of items that you would only find in a gourmet store, plus their seafood is really fresh. I highly recommend Muddy's coffeeshop on 51st and Brookside Blvd near UMKC. There is also Brookside Mother's Association. it is a large group and they plan a lot of activities. I personally didn't meet a whole lot of people that I clicked with, but I was able to meet one mother whom I absolutely adore and we used to do weekly walks at Loose Park. I hope you enjoy your time there. I wish we hadn't moved!
