Food-grade diatomaceous earth - Page 8

Hi everyone.

I thought I would share some information about diatomaceous earth with you, specifically in regards to the last few posts.

It is important to note that, at this time, there are no diatomaceous earth products that are registered for human consumption (that is why you won't find any instructions on your bag of Red Lake Earth for this purpose). This is due to the fact that not enough testing has been done to prove any long term or short term effects. That being said, many people do consume DE (Red Lake Earth included) and experience very positive results (in fact, many people swear by it) however these results are only anecdotal and not scientific in nature.

Most often DE is used as an anti-caking agent and pelleting aid in livestock feed. As well, it has been increasingly used as a natural insecticide. It is safe to use with nearly all animals (excluding reptiles - as it may dry out their skin - and other animals with pre-existing skin conditions or dust allergies).

Although I cannot make any claims for use with humans (as no scientific studies have been done), in regards to use with animals, it is perfectly safe to feed DE to them while they are pregnant and nursing.

Both pure diatomaceous earth (white in color) and DE with calcium bentonite (grey in color) will work the same for most purposes (including pest control) however, when used in animal feed DE that contains calcium bentonite or montmorillonite is much like feeding your animals brown bread over white bread. This is due to the fact that calcium bentonite contains various micro and macro minerals that are important for health.

It is important that you contact a professional health care practitioner if you have any concerns about using diatomaceous earth.

Bumping this thread!

I am almost 24 weeks pregnant. Is it safe to safe to start taking DE now? I was thinking of taking 1/2 a tsp to start.

I have the same question.   I have read that it is safe, but my concern is the detox effect. I really dont want to come down with a cold at 36 weeks pregnant. Id like to start post partum, but am not sure if the toxic release gets into the breast milk or not.....

so, ....not sure... :-)

I give it to my son in apple sauce he likes it pretty well.

We use DE to keep down the ants (they are a big problem around here) and DD (2yo) frequently grabs a handful of DE from the counter dusting and eats it. *sighs* She hasn't died yet... lol  We joke that the kids eat so much cuz they have tapeworms and DD is self-medicating. Sheepish.gif

I have read on sites that sell DE that its ok for nursing mothers

My midwife said that it is perfectly fine to take while pregnant and nursing. But I think everyone should do what they feel is best for them. I did not read this entire thread, so I am not sure if this has been said before, but when taking DE you must drink a lot of water, I drink at least an extra 20-30 ounces a day, when I don't I find I get pain when I go pee, but if I drink enough water I have no issues.

Thankyou pogo0685. My jar of diatomaceous earth sits untouched since i posted this  when pregnant with dd, now 5 months old!  My midwife didnt know anything about it. I hesitated taking it while breatfeeding, because it makes sense that if the  body is detoxing, then those toxins might be passed onto the breastmilk. If youre midwwife thinks its ok, then  i am encouraged. But what of those toxins? Why wouldnt they go into the breastmilk? (or pass into the placenta whilst pregnant)?

Yes, I'm wondering the same thing...why don't the toxins go into the milk? I know with bentonite clay they say metals bind to it and it's passed thru feces, I wonder if it's the same? I have a 4 month old...

Sounds feasible. I wonder where  more information about the actual process of detoxing this way could be found. And why do so few people know anything more definitive?

I think no matter what toxins in your body go to your breastmilk, I am not sure though if taking DE puts more in there or not. I have been taking it for so long that I am not concerned so much with a gush of toxins leaving my body so that's why I am not worried. But if you just start taking it, maybe if you take a half a teaspoon a day to start and then up that very slowly you will not have a rush of toxins leave your body, I really don't know the logistics behind it all, I just know it has helped me.

I take DE while bfing and while preggo and we've had no problems with it. DE adsorbs heavy metals and toxins, they are bound to the DE and eliminated in your stool and urine so you don't need to worry about it coming through in breast milk, if anything it makes breast milk healthier as it should help keep the heavy metals out of breast milk since it's pulling it out of your body. I began giving it to my kids when my daughter was 1.5 and it helped stop the decay of her teeth when we took it every day, need to get back on it as we've been distracted and not taking it as frequently. We do take it at the first sign of illness and it kills it in a couple hours and we end up not getting sick at all.

Thankyou so much for this. This absolutely makes sense and makes me more confident to start taking DE asap.  I wonder what metals specificially it detoxes, and which are the emost common in our environment?  My baby at 5mths has taken to crawling and is getting her hands and feet dirty in playgrounds in the summer.   I want to detox anything thats in there from her as well as my other kids. Cant wait to start taking it! And yes pogo, i will stat with a small dose.

I would like to know anyspecifics of how taking this has helped you? Interesting that it prevented you from getting sick CSA, i always take vitamin c as a prevention myself, but im sure DE would be even stronger

Well, DS1 (2yrs) and I have been taking it for a week or so now. I started both of us at 1/2 tsp, DS is at 1 tsp now and I'm at 2 (breastfeeding so going slow). I haven't personally noticed changes but DS has been super fussy, sensitive, and just acting off. DS2 hasn't been able to sleep much, though that's prob teething.

I wasn't able to read this entire thread...is the behavior changes a normal detox symptoms for children?

Hi everyone, back to this thread again, now dd is 10months old! (i first posted when i was 36weeks pregnant with her)

Ok, i finally started to get serious with this jar of DE that has sat in the kitchen since i ordered it well over a year ago

We started taking it about 15 days  ago, myself,  ds7 and ds4. We started at a teaspoon each in OJ at night.  They quite liked that, but then i felt we were consuming too much OJ so i switched  to water. I explained the benefits of DE to them, and they seemed enthusuastic about taking it. We call it our 'mud', and just gulp it down fast.

We had a case of pinworms, which seemed to clear up after about 10 days. I had a bit of phlegm myself that i dont usually have, that came and went quickly, so possibly not a cold, but a symptom of detox. Other than that, not much.

Then i realized   DE might be more effective on an empty stomach, so i took it first thing in the morning (its hard to do this with the kids because of the morning rush)

It feels much more effective this way. But i have only started, so cannot say what the effects are.

Since we had pinworms, its possible that 10month old dd may have them. I havent given her any DE yet.

It hasnt effected the other kids in any way i  have noticed, other
than a little bit of phlegm for them too.  Im still waiting for their hair to start looking shiny :-)

I am now taking 2 table spoons first thing in the morning.

We use the Natureswisdom brand.

I've just read this whole thread since I've just heard about DE to tonight and started researching it. Sounds amazing!
Questions for anyone who can answer:
My baby is 8 months old, is she too young to start taking it? She's crawling and putting everything in her mouth and we have dogs so I was hoping that by giving it to her as a preventative we could avoid any parasites that she could pick up. I'm still breastfeeding so will she get some via my milk if I'm taking it or can I give it straight to her?
The brand I've found to order here in Australia has says it has less than 1% of the harmful silica (sorry forgot its name), is that ok?
Also, I've read that it's not good to inhale, so if I wanted to use it on my dogs for fleas and in their beds or around my house for pests how would I do it safely so my daughter won't inhale any while she's exploring?

Thanks in advance, so excited for it to arrive in the post now!

Hi, i read on a site somewhere that babies could ingest DE, but i would double check. I would rather wait till my 11mth old is a bit older. I doubt it passes through the milk,  the particles would be too large. As for 'harmful' silica, i thought the silica was supposed to be good for you. I am sure that  you are double checking to see that the DE is food grade. Another thing, i dont think humans and dogs harbor the same parasites, so you may not have to worry.

Hello everyone! I found this thread through a google search and am in need of some advice. I'm so thankful to have found you guys!

I'm pretty sure I passed some sort of worm yesterday (About 1-1/1'' long, off white, tan colored), and have since been checking my stool and have seen little white things. I have seen those white things for a while but never thought anything of them. Also a bit of blood (that is a new development as far as I know). It wasn't a pinworm (too large) but I don't know if it was a tapeworm because it wasn't segmented. I informed my midwife yesterday, who assumed it was pinworm but when I looked up images I realized the worm I expelled was something different. I've suffered from IBS-like symptoms for a few years now (this past year I eliminated all known allergens from diet and am eating a WAPF/Paleo hybrid sort of diet).

I am also 17 weeks pregnant and I know conventional de-worming medications (which I really don't want to take anyway) are unsafe during pregnancy/nursing. I plan on getting a stool sample done to determine what kind of parasite/worm it is, and go from there.

I know there were some other women in this thread that were pregnant and debating on taking the FGDE, and I was wondering if anyone went ahead and tried it, and what their outcome was.

I know this brand claims it is absolutely safe during pregnancy/nursing, but I'm mostly concerned about the detox effects on my baby. However I'm equally concerned about not doing anything about it.

Any advice/knowledge/encouragement/support is greatly appreciated! I have to admit I am frightened.

I know this was a while ago but I was curious if you ever took the DE while pregnant and if so where there any side effects? I am 12 weeks and just discovered I have pinworms. I really don't want to spread this to my other child or the rest of the family.

Hi. I found food grade Diatomaceous Earth in 1998. I had a dog that had gotten fleas...which at that time was dangerous for my fragile immune system. I had survived fatal injuries & was in a coma.

Food grade Diatomaceous Earth - my grandmother & myself did some investigating found out that it IS 100% Natural, 100%safe & non-toxic to animals & humans. So I used it directly on my dog. I treat the diatomaceous earth like baby powder, you don't want to get it in your eyes, nose, or that of your pets! It shreds the outer body of ANY bug w/ an EXOSKELETON & they dehydrate & die.  It is a mechanical kill, not like a chemical or pesticide. I also found out it puts the silica our bodies lose as we age. So I put it in my dogs/cats food & helped w/ hip & joint problems, hot spots, & skin problems (bald spots....hair grows back & skin repairs) It also de-wormed them. It helped keep them regular & if you give it to them for 20  days it will do a cleanse on them - varies on how much by size of your pet & ALWAYS make sure they have plenty of water. It also gets rid of parasites, cleans the bacteria out of your pets mouths, strengthens teeth & bones.

Here is the crazy thing: IT DOES THE SAME THING FOR YOU!!! It fixes weak bones (anyone w/ osteoporsis). It fixed my fractured bones! I had 11 facial reconstructive surgeries & 7yrs. of skinwork. I live in Ohio & the weather changes often. I used to cry bc of the weather changes! Now I can't even tell when the weather changed. It has helped diminish scar tissue, all those buffers in medicines doctors had me on that & sits in different organs. Well this stuff cleans out your system, loose teeth (stronger)...new enamel around on your teeth (that sensodyne commercial needs to be updated).

To make this easy for this bc I have used this for many things & have paid it forward to many people I have encountered recovering from my injuries.  Just Google: Food Grade Silica  and also Diatomaceous Earth(DE).  I have taken this for years & have studied all the good things that this has done for friends, family, our pets, & myself. & I find I never stop learning.
