Is it possible for a beginning knitter to make socks?
I would love to make some for my boys for the winter.

Anyone know of any good patterns/
TIA!

yeah i would think so if you have knit before i think you could do it with the help of www.knittinghelp.com and the silver socks tut http://www.cometosilver.com/socks/SockClass_Start.htm

good luck

I think this is a great sock pattern for a beginner. These are wee baby socks, but they'll teach you the fundamentals of a top down sock. If you don't have a baby to give them to, you can always use them as Christmas tree ornaments.

I agree with utopia760 That tutorial is the bomb.

i would practice casting on and knitting in the round before starting your sock.

Other thing you will need to know is how to cast on, knit and purl, how to switch between hem mid row(you bring the yarn to the front or back under the needle . .easy) , how to knit in the round on double points (much asier than it looks) slip a stitch (easy peasy ) and how to pick up stitchs (little trickier). other wise socks are the perfect project for bginners who can do basic stitchs.

also trust the pattern. th hel gusset magically forms if you follow the steps.

I've only been knitting for a couple of months and I recently made my toddler socks with this pattern:

Ha! I'm working on my first pair of socks and I HATE it! It's just cause the needles are so small though. I highly recommend knittinghelp.com, they have a great video on the complicated part. My hands hurt though and when I was complaining about it dh said, why don't we just buy some? Yeah, he may have a point ;-) I am working on baby socks with fingering weight yarn and size 1 needles (supposed to be 0 even!).
