vaseline - petrolatum / lanoline

Are those harmful or harmless?

I thought to have heard petrol based products are to be avoided. Like vaseline. However, skin deep doesn't see vaseline as very harmful.

I have lanoline (which I used as nipple cream during first weeks of pumping breastmilk), which I always thought to be totally harmless and find it has a 4 rating on skin deep.

Help.

Some of skin deep confuses me, I'll be honest. Like, the Weleda spray deodorant, which is water, alcohol and essential oils, is actually rated half-poorly (4 or 5, if I remember correctly). Why? Because alcohol is addictive. Yes.

I'll have to go look it up, but I have a hard time believing that lanolin, in an unadultured form, is "bad". What are the reasons behind the rating?

Personally, I would reach for the lanolin over the petroleum based products every time.

ETA- I just went to the site and plugged in Lansinoh, so a brand specific lanolin. Lansinoh gets a 1 safety rating. Lanolin gets the 4 due to allergies, and, to a lesser degree, due to "data gaps". Do either of those things concern you?
