Looking for a book as a gift

To get my sister-in-law as her boyfriend and her are going to start TTC soon.

I would like the book to be a bit biast if I am honest lol....I would like it to include:

Benefits and importance of breastfeeding - not just from a nutritional point of view but the whole picture. I would like this backed up with...you know...'proof'. People like to see reasearch, etc lol

Benefits and importance of co-sleeping - not just from a practicle point of view but the whole picture. I would also like this backed up with good old 'proof'...you know how people are.

Bonuses would be basic information on things like vaccines, etc. This doenst have to be biast information, but whole truths would be nice.

And most importantly - becaues of the way or western society is...I would like the book to stress the importance of a naturally gained independence in our children. Most books on babies and such stress how important it is to push our babies to independence...becaues dont you know, we will only make rods for our backs if we dont and they will never be independent otherwise!... I want the book to talk about things like CIO and why it is bad and you should never ever do it. I want it to dispell the myths. A breastfed child who is allowed to self wean will not still be breastfeeding at 15...neither will they still be sleeping in the family bed at 15 if they are allowed there in the first place...of course, backed up with research and proof!...

And all...easy to read please...lol

Dr. Sears is coming to mind - but I have never read any of his books so I am asking all of you to recommend a good one to get!

That and a good sling will be my gift to her. I couldnt have asked for a better gift myself!...shame I never got such a gift! lol Hopefully, if all goes to plan, she wont stumble as much as I did and have fewer regrets.

Thanks

I enjoyed Your Self Confident Baby. It doesn't cover everything on your wish list though.

I love The Baby Book by Dr Sears. We've bought it at least 3 times for friends who were expecting.

I like Natural Family Living by Peggy O'Mara...I think it covers all the things you mention. I haven't read the whole thing though.

Yep!

I think it meets all your requirements, and it's very accessible.

I heartily second the recommendation of The Baby Book by Sears. It is my favorite resource for the first 2 years and I have a lot of books. I have also given this book as a baby shower gift.

If your SIL is just now TTC, I also recommend The Thinking Woman's Guide to a Better Birth by Henci Goer. It is an extremely well-researched book about childbirth with a slant toward the most natural birth possible and helping women make informed choices. This is the book that got me started on the road that eventually led to AP, extended breastfeeding, co-sleeping, etc.

Another possibility - how about a subscription to Mothering magazine?

The Complete Book of Pregnancy and Childbirth by Sheila Kitzinger. Lots of nice color photographs with the added bonus of being a British publication.

I know this is after the fact, but I think the Baby Book is great and I second the idea of a subscription to Mothering Magazine. My dad (75 yr old German man) has had some of his ideas changed by reading the copies he finds lying around!

Dr. Sears' The Baby Book and a sling is a wonderful gift!

I like to give Dr. Sears' The Baby Book as a gift. It presents AP in a kind of friendly way.

I would like to give my favorite books, like Peggy O'Mara's Giving Birth Naturally and Henci Goer's Thinking Woman's Guide to a Better Birth. But many people would not be receptive.
