also taking recommendations for places to eat at in the Southern 1/2 of the state.

A good place, if you're going to Seward (because we have been to a couple places there that are yuck and one place made us all sick!). Yoly's Bistro is good and pretty family-friendly too. When we went, I had their blackened halibut sandwich. Spicy, but very good. They had a decent kids menu too.

I see you reviewed Kobe. One of my favorites. The boys love watching them do the onion "volcano".

My husband adores Sushi & Sushi here in ANC. It's good sushi, not sure about the cooked stuff anymore. Maybe I'm just getting tired of eating there though.

I have tried sushi and just cannot eat most of it. Some is okay, as long as it does not have a real strong fishy flavor. when you eat your sushi do you use a lot of soy sauce or wasabi?
I am still growing my palate! LOL

Kobe rocks! we have done Benihana's a few time until we found Kobe, we like Kobe better. They are a little lower key and better for people like me and my family.

I have many in Fairbanks to review, I have not posted them yet. Need to be in the blogging mood! LOL

Luckily Anchorage has so many to choose from! I had thai yesterday and my god was it good! I could have licked the plate!

what thai restaurant were you at? we also do sushi sushi sometimes and usually have a good experience when the owner is around. but our fave is bear tooth! can't wait until we are no longer dairy/wheat/egg/soy/nut/gluten free and get to eat burritos there!!!!:

not sure the name, have to look it up but we were told to try the Thai place on the corner of 36th and Old seward, next to the Natural Pantry.

If you're in Anchorage and feel like checking out an authentic hole-in-wall Vietnamese (and pan-Asian) place, try Pho Lena on Spenard, just south of REI. It's the kind of place where the chef will come out and tell you about how she made the noodles from scratch and stuff like that. We like it a lot. The Vietnamese place in the Dimond Center Mall is good, too, but Lena is much more of a home-cookin' place. Lena is very impressed that my 2yo ds loves spring rolls; she calls him the spring roll boy whenever we go in.

In case you make it down to Homer, we happen to be very culinarily (is that a word?) lucky.

Cups is delicious. General Americanish food, but all fresh and lots of local fish. Caesar salad is said to put women in labor, it's so garlicy. Didn't work for me though, and I went there three times! Good wine, decadent desserts, and reasonably priced.

Fat Olives is my absolute favorite restaurant in the world. Spendy, but my mouth waters just thinking of it. Mostly meditteranean food. Local fish, pasture raised beef (the best? A beef tenderloin stuffed with goat cheese and wrapped in prosciutto, yummo!) Also, their delicious "Black Hole Caesar Salad" could put a women in labor too! They are also good for lunch with delicious sandwiches and soup.

The Cosmic Kitchen serves Mexican and American food. But not lardy refried beans type of Mexican-they use black beans and their burritos are pretty healthy. They also serve halibut burgers, buffalo burgers and regular burgers.

There is also Lands End and The Homestead, which are spendy. In my opinion, Lands End is the typical fancy hotel restaurant food. I've never been the The Homestead, but if I'm going to spend money eating out, I'm going to Fat Olives.

We have a lot of other yummy places, I could go on and on, but those are my top 3.

I have to agree with most of the restaurant recommendations.
Anchorage:
Thai - Chang Mai Ultimate Thai (the place previously mentioned at 36th & Old Seward, in old Burger King bldg in front of natural pantry.)
Sandwich/Soup/Salad: Urban Greens. Downtown at 3rd & G St., near Snow Goose. Great salads.
Pizza To Go: Capri Pizza. Never thought the best pizza would be made by a Pakastani couple who learned to make pizza in Scandavia. Awesome seasonings.
Best Surprise Burger: Organic Oasis. (real beef burger, best in Anchorage; please the vegan and meat-aholic at the same restaurant.)

In Homer, I have to add Sourdough Express. Great breakfasts & sandwiches.

OMG The Sourdough Express has an egg plate that is absolutely beyond delicous! : Something about a woman's name in the title. Ahhhhhhhhhh

Chang Mai is tasty but not THE best Thai. Certainly, the cheapest, fastest, and best lunch specials, though. IMO : We actually really like the Thai place near the Ak Club South for dinner.

And, actually, we're liking Champion's Choice pizza for take-out, lately.

Oh, don't forget Gallos!!! We have found the old one on Arctic is consistently better than the new one near Borders, though.

Oh yes, The Sourdogh Express (only open in the summer) and Two Sisters Bakery are great for breakfast and lunch-all organic, homemade breads and pastries etc. Plus, they both have great outdoor seating with play areas for the kiddos.

Great!! You guts are awesome

When we did Chang Mai, it was at lunch. DH and I met there. they were fast and so friendly!

Right now I am in cali and so not eating out in Anchorge much but I have a few more reviews to write up for the blog, I just have to stop being lazy and do it!!

(gallos in Fairbanks is good!

I LOVE wasabi but normally put a big dab of it in a bowl of soy sauce.

We've been to Gallo's in Fbks four times, and every time has been a DISASTER. Last time, I ordered my favorite dish (cheese enchiladas) and they tasted like a sweet (ewwww) salt lick. I'm not kidding. No spice, no enchilada taste, just sweet. I sent the plate back and went without.

Before that, we've had 45 min waits for service ( !! ), errors in our orders, rude servers, you name it.

Re Gallo's: Ew, good to know!

We went to Geraldo's for our anniversary last year and they screwed our order up--the cook put so much cheese on the pizza that it all slid right off when you picked up a slice! But luckily we didn't get charged for it. That should have been the last time we tried to go out for Italian...

On a positive note...there's a tiny little hole-in-the-wall pizza and Italian food place in the little mall near Gulliver's books...Pazzo's or Pazzo G's, something like that.

When B was getting ready for his week in LV, I took a "day off." Part of that "day off" was meeting onyxravnos and her little guy at the park, and part of that day off was a trip out to eat, and I went to Pazzo (or Pazzo G's, I honestly can't remember the name).

The food was phenomenal, and even though the menu doesn't say, you can order your pizza or calzone just the way you want it. I was VERY happy with the whole setup.

The only complaint I had was that the garlic/cheesebread was a little undermelted on the top, but dang, I'm not a bread eater normally, and the bread itself was JUST RIGHT.

I think the server and i got to talking and it was served cold because we couldn't be bothered to worry about food service.

OTOH, I felt totally at home sitting there reading my "Buddhism for Mothers of Young Children," drinking my chianti (I was walking to Gulliver's afterward) and enjoying the quiet.

I really appreciate a restaurant that lets me eat, read, and enjoy some peace and quiet!!

Oh that is NOT cool at all. We did lunch there this summer when we came up to get our stuff out of storage. It was good and quickish for a sitdown place.
sorry you had such bad luck. You know, I would not have been back 4 times with that kind of service though. you are much more forgiving then I am.

Pazzo G's! Yes, I have been there with my DD. I took her out for a mother/daughter luncheon. It was okay but weird food and my DD was a bit leary of trying some of it. I ate it cuz I like different things. The Gelato was great though with REAL banana in the flavor we picked out. I did really enjoy the atmosphere!!! great hip joint and very quite and comfortable.

Yeah, we went to Gallo's 4 times because I LOVE Mexican (or Americanised Mexican) food. I mean, I lOVE it. And my Thai addiction only goes so far in making my DH eat Thai every time we go out.

I was impressed with Pazzo G's food, but I ordered very simple things...cheese garlic bread, a calzone with spices and meat, and a glass of chianti. I have never had gelatto, so don't know how that might turn out.

Because of my apple/pear/carrot/etc food allergies, I have to be fairly picky with ordering out.

The other place we've had good luck is the little Thai place on College Rd...I can't remember the name!

And Han's Eggroll House in the Goldstream Valley...oh, my! They even supplied 300 eggrolls to our last Fire Dept open house, free of charge!

Don't go to Wendy's in Fairbanks. They are guilty of price gouging and false advertising. I just sent a letter to their corporate office they pissed me off so badly.
