Want to eat cloned meat?

Would you? Ick.

The FDA hasn't yet completed writing the 300-page scientific review on which the summary is based, even though the agency is asking its scientific advisers to critique the risk assessment next week. How, critics wonder, can anyone be confident of the FDA's review of such an important matter on the basis of 11 pages of vague information?

In addition, the FDA hasn't yet considered the societal reaction to using cloned animals for food, something the National Research Council specifically urged addressing.

Nor is it clear that the FDA has the legal authority to stop a cloner emboldened by these preliminary findings from breaking the moratorium and selling cloned products, she said.

"They seem to be shockingly obtuse when it comes to the fact that this ... makes people very uncomfortable," she said.

Consumer reaction could prove key to whether food producers want to invest in cloning technology or not. Foods that are genetically modified face trade barriers overseas despite FDA assurances that those now sold are safe. While cloning means a genetic copy, not genetic modification, public understanding of biotechnology is sketchy.

"If these products are safe, is the consumer confident in that?" asked Stephanie Childs of the Grocery Manufacturers of America.

When it comes to animals that are born healthy, there are some differences between the cloned and noncloned at young ages. "But as the animal matures, they become indistinguishable," Sundlof said.
They may look indistinguishable, but *are* they at the molecular level? I had read that cloned animals have higher rates of cancer--- not exactly something great to be introducing to the food source.

There's no evidence that meat or milk derived from healthy cloned farm animals can harm people, the Food and Drug Administration says in its first attempt at assessing questions about the emerging technology.
THats backwards, IMO. THE FDA shouldn't have to proove there *is* a risk, it should have to be proven that there is *NO* risk.

I really don't understand *why* you would want to clone animals for consumption anyway. Just through selective breeding & the like they have already totally altered the livestock in this country, why clone it (except for medical research)?

I'm not a vegetarian by any means, but I saw this story over the weekend & I am stinkin mad! All the other problems in the meat industry & they want to introduce this? No way! Just might push me over the edge...

The other reason it makes me mad is because I have family who own cattle ranches. It's hard enough for them to make ends meet...

Cloning is just wrong, period.

Cloning for human consumption is totally wrong in my opinion. I don't want to eat it, that is for sure.

I saw a news clip on it and they mentioned that it probably won't be introduced into the food chain for many years to come, and then went on to say that it could happen without us even knowing about it. YIKES !!!

The scariest part for me is that they say they may not require special labeling.

I guess I'll be finding the nearest organic farm!

I'll eat cloned meat. I don't think it'll be in the market anytime soon, but it doesn't bother me.

As is, I haven't seen anything in the regulations for organic about cloning. If you want organic to mean non-cloned, now's probably the time to write your congressional representatives.

and I mean that in the most sarcastic way possible. No way would I eat cloned meat if I knew it. I am against man cloning anything in every way shape or form. But that probably doesn't matter, we've all been eating GM food without knowing it for years. Makes me want to learn how to farm. To many folks tinkerin' with our food supply these days. Scientists are always forgetting to ask if they should because they are too busy trying to see if they can. We'll be the death of ourselves yet.

I cannot stop picturing that cow in Douglas Adams' The Restaurant At The End Of The Universe. Bred from birth to be pleased, ingratiating and ready for it's fate as someone's evening meal.

It's quite funny really. I think they will eventually grow animal protein in huge vats like William Gibson novels allude to. No more factory farming. Just factory. With no brain and no feelings they won't even have to be "killed". Just "unplugged" I guess.

The Future is a weird place but no weirder than now I suppose.

I keep thinking of Oryx and Crake, how they were raising chicken nuggets-- as nuggets! puke

Pretty much every other food was soy based.

Well, I guess it could be worse, we could be living in womb-pods and fed intravenously without our knowledge. Wait a minute, are we? Neo, help me!
