NYS birth certificate question

Sigh. We're trying to obtain a social security card for our son, as the town clerk says that isn't something she does. So we have our stack of identification and head to the SSA office (about 45 mins away!). We get there and are denied because the birth certificate (that above town clerk completed) doesn't even have our names on it as parents!! I contacted a town clerk in another town, the one with the hospital, and he states that yes this is what the forms look like when they fill them out. He says it's a new update to prevent identity theft. So I wait a painfully long time on the phone to talk to a SSA agent and she assures me that they are not right and the birth cert has parents names on it.

Can anyone else give me there experiences? I'm kind of at a loss as to where to go from here.

we went nuts trying to figure it out and then got one in the mail...it seems when we got the birth certificate they automatically sent in the paperwork for it. try calling and see if you can get good answers. good luck!

You know, I really hope this is the case. I called the hospital and talked with a really helpful unit secretary. She says she submits the birth cert papers and then the DOH sends the info to SSA. She says there is just a box that is checked when the stuff is sent in electronically. Problem is, we got the birth cert about 5 weeks ago, no sign of a social security card yet.

Even if it came, I think I'm still concerned about the birth cert without parents name on it. What does everyone elses birth certs look like? I know with DD 2 years ago, hospital birth, it had our info on it. I called friends who had a hospital birth a few months before our DS was born and theirs has parent info. :

I don't know how they can fill out a BC without parents names. That sounds really strange to me.

For me, they gave me the form to fill out while in the hospital and I filled it out and gave it back to the nurse to get it filed. I have never had a hospital birth before, so I don't know if that is normal or not.

It might vary by state but here you just check a box if you want a SS#. Has the birth cert gone through to the state yet? Because I don't see how they could omit the parents names. When I filled out ours half of the form was parents info, including stuff that is really none of their damn buisness.

FWIW, I feel your pain. I went 2 weeks ago to register dd2's birth and it took an hour at the courthouse to find out that the vital records dept doesn't register births or deaths anymore, go figure. Then when I got to the health dept I was told that the one guy who's authorized to do it is on vacation for a month. So, sorry baby girl, you can't exist until Ralph gets home from the beach.

ETA~ sorry didn't catch the state...this post might not be much help.

We live in NYS and had a UC and the birth certificate AND Social Security card was a piece of cake. We filled out all the birth certificate info ourselves (the actual birth certificate is in our handwriting which is weird and neat at the same time) ,took it to the county clerk's office and I don't think it was even a week and a half later that we got both the SS card and birth certificate in the mail. I think the SS # arrived before the birth certificate, even. Maybe try the county clerk's office and see if you have more luck than the town clerk?

I think I'd spend that month going up the chain, calling and writing letters:

"Did you know that Bexar County does not issue birth certificates while Ralph Brown, the Bexar County Birth Certificate issuer, is on vacation? Could you help me get a birth certificate for my little baby girl?"

Hmm. I think I'd first ask the clerk for official documentation of the change, and ask him to write a letter referencing the law/code, sign and notarized, then take that to the SSA. If the SSA still gave me a hassle I'd tell them to call the clerk at ###-#### and tell him that the law/code is not sufficient.

When I got married, I lived in Germany, dh in Alaska. I was from NY and was married there.

After the hm I went to the DMV in my sister's town, give them the marriage certificate (for which I paid a lot for each copy) which is the license with the town seal on it, and ask for a new license with my new name. I went rounds with the clerk:

Clerk: This is a license, not a marriage certificate.
Me: MyTown says that a license with the raised seal on it is a marriage certificate.
Clerk: But it's not.
Me: It is; I ask for 5 copies of my marriage license. They gave me five of these and said once it has the seal, it is a marriage certificate.
(Repeat)
Clerk: Didn't they give you one of those nice ones with the gold border on it.
Me: Yes, but my dh has it. He is on a plane to Alaska right now. I live in Germany and leave to go there in two days.
Clerk: Well, can't you get it from your husband?
Me: Eventually. But I leave in two days. We are military and need to show our marriage certificate to a dozen agencies to prove we are married.
Clerk: Well, there's nothing we can do...
Me: Yes, there is. You can give me a new driver's license since I can only do it IN PERSON, and I leave the country in TWO DAYS.
Clerk: But we need the marriage certificate...
Me: THIS IS the marriage certificate. A nice piece of paper with a shiney gold border is not the only legal marriage certificate. THIS is what MyTown gives as copies of the marriage certificate! Call the town hall at MyTown and ask them what their marriage certificate copies look like.
Clerk: "blank stare"
Me: I need to talk to someone else.
Clerk: goes back to another person and converses.
Clerk Supervisor: Don't you have the nice certificate with the gold border?
Me: Yes, but my dh has it. He is on a plane to Alaska right now. I live in Germany and leave to go there in two days. We are military and need to show our marriage certificate to a dozen agencies to prove we are married.

Clerk Supervisor: Um, well I guess we can do it.
