Looking for personal experience and feedback on NS midwives

I'm looking for personal experiences with any NS midwives who will attend births (at home or in hospital) in the Halifax area.

How was it?
What would you change?
What do you wish was different?
What did you like best?
Where was your birth?
Was it your first or subsequent?
How recent was the birth?
What was the name of your MW or MWs?

Anything else you think I should know?

I know this is a bit personal but roughly how much did you pay for the services? If you don;t want to post, please PM me if you feel comfortable.

I would really like to hear from bluepetals if you see this too!

TIA

Hi!

I used Maren at Nova Scotia midwives ... And could not have been happier with our experience with her.

Currently chasing the result - I will get back to your questions as soon as I can!

How was it?
Perfect! Here is the story.

What would you change?
I really wish I had a birthing pool. Completed unrelated to our MW, I know.

What do you wish was different?
Hmmm. Kind of the same question?

What did you like best?
Maren was EXACTLY what I needed. I was out of control, needed someone to take control for me. She did - but not really. She just somehow became my rock. She did exactly what I wanted her to "do": only checked my cervix one time, let me do whatever I needed to do, checked my blood pressure and the baby's heartbeat periodically, did lots of medical-type checks on him a couple hours after he was born. Came over every other day (or more often) for two weeks after the birth. These are things I wanted and needed in a MW.

Where was your birth?
At "home" - we rented a cottage in NS to have the baby, since we live in NB. Our home was too far for her to travel.

Was it your first or subsequent?
First

How recent was the birth?
Almost one year ago.

What was the name of your MW or MWs?
Maren Dietze

Anything else you think I should know?
I cannot imagine having a baby without Maren. She is calm, cool, collected, and quiet. You'd never know she was there, except when you need her. And she knows when you need her, without you asking.

I know this is a bit personal but roughly how much did you pay for the services?
She said most people pay between $1,500 and $2,000 - we were within that range.

Amazing story. I felt lke I was right there with you. I too had all back labour with my first and never felt a single twinge through my belly. Your labour was so much like mine and I've quite heard it described so well that others could truly understand how it felt.

Thank you. I'm looking forward to a MW assisted birth this time around and I'm hoping a homebirth is an option with the new regulation changes possible. I'm meeting Kelly and possible Maren on Monday and now I can't wait!

Couldn't read and then not comment...awesome story, it got me a little teary, even. Maren was at my DS2's birth in April (she was backup/second midwife) and spent the night at my house after the birth rather than drive home that night. What a lovely presence she was the next morning when we woke up.

The more I read about "fetus-ejection," the more I realize Maren is nothing short of an angel. I can't believe how ... Well, I'd say "how good she is at her job," but it's so much more than a profession, and she's so far beyond good.

without going into the complete detail because i am kind of rushed, i will say that teh birth of my 2nd daughter was attended by kirsten and maren... they were fantastic. truly what a midwives should be. after a less-than-great 3rd birth experience, i have an even stronger appreciation for what they do...

Kristyn, you had another baby! Congrats! I'm sorry that your experience wasn't as good the third time.

I'm currently seeing, and really liking Karen Robb as my midwife. However, I haven't had my baby yet (planning a hospital birth at the moment) so can't say anything about that. Karen, however, has attended the homebirths of at least two of my friends, and came with great recommendations from both of them. I'm sure I won't have any regrets.
