DH and I are going in celebration of our 5th anniversary but hotels in Boston are very espensive. Is there somewhere we can get in quickly by public transportation? I've never been there and have no knowledge of the Boston area.

I've recommended this place before and will again-- http://www.thebeechtreeinn.com/bti_index.htm it's in Brookline, a residential suburb surrounded on three sides by the City of Boston, maybe a 15 minute trolley ride, at most, to downtown Boston. Reasonable rates, and of course a nice breakfast and evening cookies are provided. Within walking distance to Coolidge Corner, which has wonderful restaurants, shopping, and a great old movie theater too.

I would try looking at some B&Bs in Cambridge, Charlestown, or Brookline. If you go any further out, you'll probably need to take the commuter rail in and not the subway.
