USC student required to get MMR shot...

My son is just entering USC (University of Southern California) and was told that it was required for him to get the MMR Vaccine. He is 19 and I stopped vaccinating him years ago and have an eight year old that I never vaccinated. So I called USC and told them that California law states that Vaccinations are not required...I was worried that they would say this is a private university. But luckily they did not...BUT, he still has to write a letter stating why he does not want to get the vaccine and then it has to be APPROVED! The approved part irritates and worries me. I was hoping to get a little help on this letter, since I will be writing it! I could tell that my 19 year old really was not into it and I don't want him injected with those poisons. So, if anyone would like to give me some tid bits for this letter, I'd appreciate it!

Thank you ahead of time, Krysti

My DD attends CSUN and she was simply asked to sign a waiver stating that she was not vaccinated. (...no, I did not see this paper, actually.) This is something new since I never was vaccinated either and no one ever asked me about my vax status...or I just lied.

Ask the University for a copy of the state law (or university policy) that requires this nonsense. He can just write a letter that states he does not want to be vaccinated since ...it is against his beliefs
...the vaccines are poison
...the vaccines do not work
...he had a vaccine reaction
...whatever other reason he can come up with...read something from the CDC or NIH that discusses the dubious value of vaccines and include it in your letter. That should expedite approval.

Obviously the letter is going to be personal...

any links to the cdc and NIH information? It seems they have redesigned the site.

If you know, it may save a lot of searching.

Much thanks... I would give it, if I had it.

There isn't an exemption form he can fill out? That is what they do at my university.

The whole letter thing seems bogus to me.

USC Student required to get MMR shot...

Thanks for your replies...There is a form, as well as a mandatory letter to accompany the form. I know, it's interesting. Any other ideas would be appreciated!

It's great to hear of adults that have never been vaxed.

Take care, Krysti

Sample Religious Exemption Letter

Quote:
To whom it may concern;

(We / I) {First and Last name(s)}, as the {(parent (s) / guardian(s)} of ______________________(name of newborn child) are exercising (our/my) rights under the US Constitution, PUBLIC HEALTH LAW, ARTICLE 21. CONTROL OF ACUTE COMMUNICABLE DISEASES,TITLE VI. POLIOMYELITIS AND OTHER DISEASES, NY CLS Pub Health § 2164 (2002), to receive Religious Exemption from Vaccination, ALL injections, prophylaxis, & testing due to our genuine and sincere religious beliefs which are contrary to the practices herein required.

The U.S. Supreme Court held in Frazee V. Illinois Dept. of Security, 489 U.S. 829, that a religious belief is subject to protection even though no religious group espouses such beliefs or the fact that the religious group to which the individual professes to belong may not advocate or require such belief. This ruling is also reflected in Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 as amended Nov. 1, 1980; Part 1605.1-Guidelines on Discrimination Because of Religion.

Doesn't CA have a philosophical exemption?

Yes.

USC is a private institution that may be throwing its weight around.
