Sarah Palin, GOP VP nominee, tells People she is a pumping mom - Page 3

Irritated Mod Reminder:

No posting nasty, unsubstantiated rumors about people. Even people in the public eye. Even Sarah Palin! No. No. No. It is not within the User Agreement, it is not ok on MDC.

No. Stop this. Do not do this in this thread. No. Stop. Now.

There's some interesting Lactivism issues to be discussed here, but I can't leave the dang thread up if people keep getting all tinfoil hat about it. I cannot. Argh.

That is so nice to hear from a public figure. I agree with the pp though about her politics. What a shame..

I returned to work when Dane was about 4 weeks old but he always goes with me (I'm a nanny of 3). I wore him till he could crawl and now he has free reign. I BF on demand and his needs come first. If any of that ever changed though, I'd be gone in a heartbeat.

I think it is good that she is nursing/pumping and slinging Trig.

I am an Obama supporter but I am getting frustrated with the fact that some people don't understand not all women have horrible labor or breastfeeding issues.

I was up and running a few hours after my kids birth. If I had worked I could have gone back to work 3 days post partum----especially if I had her job.

I don't become a raving lunitic and I am very calm during labor--well until pushing. Then I get loud.

Yes, I could. It wouldn't be my first choice, but it's nearly impossible to find a candidate who agrees with me on EVERY single issue. I'm very glad for Trig that Ms. Palin is nursing and babywearing, but that doesn't mean I agree with all (or any) of her politics.

I don't think a candidate's parenting style is really an important factor in a government official, not unless they're pushing to make laws regarding spanking or NIP- none of which is really being handled on the national level right now. We really DON'T need a nursing mother in the White House to ensure pro-breastfeeding legislation around the country. It's happening anyway.

I have no idea if Hillary Clinton breastfed Chelsea, or if Barak Obama spanks his kids. It never came up during the Primaries, and honestly it's irrelevent.

She did. I've seen her speak on TV (years ago when she was First Lady) about the time breast milk started coming out of Chelsea's nose and it alarmed her (although she looked back on it with humor.) That's normal by the way and not harmful if anyone is wondering.

There are some beautiful pictures of her and her girls on McCain's daughter's blog. So far I've seen 2 pics of her baby being bottle fed, so I guess she doesn't NIP (which I can understand, she has to be careful about not looking too gentle or maternal).

Nice pick of Trig with his dad-- the dad looks kind of crunchy:

Thanks for sharing this. Regardless of whether or not McCain wins (which I hope he will), it is absolutely awesome for America to see the image of a powerful woman who is also a nursing mom and who can balance both roles! I am so encouraged for my daughter's future! The world is changing for her!

I think it's cool that her more AP parenting is getting some press. I still won't vote for her, though. Even if she was democrat I'd be worried because of her lack of foreign policy experience.

It also worries me about returning to work after three days. I'd like someone who knows it's important to take care of yourself first if you're to take care of everyone else. Some people may take it as a positive however - she will not let her kids needs interfere with being a good leader.

I am encouraged by images of powerful women, especially those who can balance roles.

But Sarah Palin is not the first. She is not even the first female to run as Vice President on a mainstream ticket. That would be Geraldine Ferraro who ran on the Democratic vice presidential ticket with Walter Mondale back in 1984.

And if I recall, Winona LaDuke, a Native American woman ran on the Green Party ticket in 1996 and 2000.

I believe there have been others. Sarah Palin is not as monumental and she's certainly not a first.

And, I think we have to seriously ask, if Hillary Clinton had not made such huge strides in this year's Democratic primaries and if Hillary Clinton had not gotten so much media attention, as well as delegate votes, would McCain and his campaign have chosen Sarah Palin?

Hillary Clinton, and many, many other women on both sides of the party, have done more for our daughters to break down the glass ceiling and promote balance. IMHO.

And Hillary's policy platform actually promotes and strengthens useful laws that help balance...such as family leave and health care, and child care.

And it was Hillary's husband Bill Clinton who signed into law the Family and Medical Leave Act.

I totally agree. I think anyone who breastfeeds should be applauded, but that doesn't mean she's qualified to be VP. Otherwise, I could be VP 'cause I breastfed for 2.5 years.

And I'm not qualified to be VP, even though I do AP.

Much is being made that Sarah Palin breastfeeds. I think that's great. But how does that in any way make her qualified to be VP?

It's kind of like my feelings about Dennis Kuchinich being a vegetarian. Cool. I like that. But I'm not voting for him based on his vegetarianism.

I won't vote for anyone for personal choices like these that fall outside the realm of the job description of president or vice president.

That is Nice,

You did not read my post. This is the first time America has seen a woman of power in politcs ( on a national level) that is breastfeeding and has a young child. WE did not she Hillary or Ferraro slinging a baby or balancing motherhood and politics! My comments had nothing to do with politics and who is qualified or not (in YOUR opinion). I think that the visual image of Sarah Palin running for high office and balancing motherhood with small children is great for ALL American woman. Most powerful women in politics come to power after they have raised their children. I think it is wonderful to see one that says, "I can run this country and raise children!"

Can you, for a moment, put your politics aside and see that the Palin nomination helps American women regardless of whether or not she comes to office or not. The image is powerful!

This isn't politics, and we aren't hosting a political debate here, except insofar as it applies to Lactivism. This thread is now closed. Please do not start another one.
