Cool weather babywearing...

DD was born in Jan of this year, so last winter, I just wore my maternity coat over her while in the carrier. Now that she's bigger, I'm wondering if I should change that? Do most of you wear big coats over your LOs while babywearing, or do you bundle separately? TIA!

I'm like you in that last year she was little enough to fit under my coat.
This year, I'm thinking I'll just put a hat on her and wrap my coat around her as best I can, if it's for a very short dash, say 15 feet from my car into the supermarket.

For longer carries, I'm thinking of getting one of these:

There are also special bw coats and vests:

I'm kind of waiting to see how much outdoor bw we really end up doing in the winter before we buy anything.

We got a Monkey Pocket (website in previous post) last winter and it was GREAT! It fit over my MT and my SSC, and was easy to use in front carries and back carries.

I just made a zip insert for my winter coat. I had one of those columbia winter coats. with a zipper. I found some water proof fabric and some fleece and a zipper that fit the jacket, and made a rectangular extender for my jacket that just zipped in. It was about 22 inches long and 8 inches wide. took me all of an hour and worked like a charm. If you know a seamstress, she could do it for you in no time.

I have a peekaru and I love it, both my husband and I wore it all the time last winter with our daughter in it! The only downside is that it is really hard (ie: almost impossible) to use it with a back carry if you are alone.

Thanks so much for the feedback! These are really great tips. I didn't realize we had so many options.

i do it differently depending on the weather. when it's not super cold, i will just put a snug-fitting fleece on me, and put babylegs under pants and a light jacket on the baby. when it's colder out, i have a babywearing poncho that i put over that. occasionally i'll grab DH's fleece jacket instead if i'm wearing baby on my front and don't feel like messing with a poncho. it doesn't get insanely cold here, IMO, usually not below the 20's F, so with the body heat generated by the bw'ing that's always been plenty of warmth.

Last winter, I switched between wearing a maternity winter coat and a wool poncho/wrap with a front opening. I think this year, we will have to stick with the poncho since LO is getting so big. I look forward to cold weather babywearing again. :

Nothing beats a peekaru vest and a Wool blended Didymos wrap :

I just used my winter coat when ds2 was a baby, but last year I invested in a kindercoat. I really like it.

Another vote for the Kindercoat and/or the Peekaru; they're really well made and versatile! I wish I'd gotten the Kindercoat earlier in the season last year. I'm looking forward to using it this winter for back carries.

before i got my amauti (inuit babywearing parka), me or DH wore DD in a wrap and zip up our parka. we live in the arctic, so its a little crazy cold.
