need hat pattern

I'm making some baby legs from a skein of $1 yarn. It is going well and I want to make a matching hat with the leftover yarn. I want a rolled brim hat with a topknot that is made from what I guess is called and 'I cord'. Anyway, since it is leftover yarn I'm not sure I'll have enough so I will supplement with other white yarn I have. But here's the thing, if I do run out of the variegated, then I want the solid white to be the brim. So I need a pattern that starts at the top and ends at the brim. Can anyone help me figure out how to do this. I use #8dpn, 5 stitches and 7 rows per inch. DS head is 19" right now, but I want the hat for this winter. I've never figured out a pattern so if someone could help me with the math that would be great.

Use this recipe but start with an Icord the desired length for your tie. I personally would use a 3 stitch cord. You will need to increase up to 8 stitches on your last row of the ICord.

Remember that with hats in general, you want a finished size that is smaller than the actual head circumference. For a child with a 19" circumference I would aim for 17"ish. You more than likely will not see an appreciable difference in head size between now and winter, either.

Thanks, that is just what I was looking for. Since it is knit top down, can I still get a rolled brim by continuing in stockinette? Will I knit an extra inch for the brim?

Yes it will still curl. I can't say how much extra to knit as every yarn curls differently IME.

The beauty is that you could always roll it an extra turn and tack it in a couple of places if it doesn't curl up high enough :-)
