Hi everyone!
My husband and I are regular exercisers (mostly elliptical training, weights, and walking the dog) and are interested in starting to run. But I'm confused about how to start without letting my HR get too high. If you can share any of your runner's wisdom, I'd be so grateful.

I'm in good shape and normal weight. But before I started working out, I was horribly, horribly out of shape despite being thin. I had some scares with fainting when I first tried jogging. The doctor ruled out anything serious, but I was a little spooked. When I started using the elliptical, I started out extremely slow to keep my HR low. (It's kind of cool to think that the speed I used to go at the peak of my workout isn't even warm up speed for me now.)
The other day I tried alternating jogging and walking on the treadmill, and I still noticed that my heart rate would go high, like to 190, just from jogging pretty slowly for a minute or two. By the end of the 30 minutes, I got to where I could control my HR a little better by moderating my effort, but it was still going up to 162-170 whenever I jogged. My husband, who's older than me and a bit chubby, has no trouble maintaining his heart rate below 150 despite a huge effort.
Is my situation at all normal for a non-runner? Does it mean that I'm still really out of shape? Will this kind of thing improve with time? Do you have any suggested "routines" for improving?
Thank you!
