I always heard it was to cut down on costs and stop bottles from spoiling. I enjoy the cork though.

i think it means put the comma in where needed:
34,259

and the underlined digit would be the 'tens' place. at least i think thats what they're getting at.

yep - really glad to meet you finally pauline!

Yeah, I just read somewhere that sometimes the cork can smell like wet cardboard, (because of the sanitation process,) and that can transfer to the wine once in a while. I would imagine it is a lot cheaper to just use something else too.

I like the cork too though. I was sad for a few days when I thought the trees were actually going extinct.

Hedy I don't think that is the same thing. That is the names AFTER a decimal. Those I remember. This is asking for a period name. All of these numbers are on the positive side of a decimal.

Well it would be in the ones place if it were asking for the place value. Here is why I don't think that is what it is asking.

Questions 1-4 asked for the value of the underlined number.

4-8 are asking for the period name of the underlined number. All numbers are positive.

If they wanted the value in 1-4 why would they ask the same question with different wording in 5-8?

I told Dh his link read like greek to me. His answer: The greek invented much of our math system.

NOT HELPFUL. He can figure it out when he gets home. I just had her skip those and do the rest.

I wonder if the period name would be units? At the top of the table, it lists periods as: Billions, Millions, Thousands, and Units. So... I wonder if it's 9 units?

You guys are making me cringe and shudder with this horrible math talk. If I could do it all over again I wish I could try homeschooling for myself.

I think they're just trying to see if the child recognizes the term "period". This site makes it clear that "periods" are just the "place" as determined by the placement of the period. The first three digits are unique in that they are all different: ones, tens, hundred. But after that, you get a grouping of three numbers that are all ones, tens, and hundreds OF something: thousands, millions, billions, etc. So, the underlined number you gave in the example would definitely be the period "ones." They were just trying to stump her with the "period".

It was great to see/meet so many of you today at coffee! Maddy had a great time, and I was able to fill their register with spare change. The guy at the counter kept thanking me for paying for everything in loose change.

Cliff's enjoying his new "man cave." All his tools are so well organized, his heavy bag is hung up (though it shakes the livingroom floor when he punches it), and he got it all swept up and blew all the dust out with his air compresser and fans. Then I made him blow the dust out of my laptop keyboard, too. I wonder if he'll set himself up a little office to work there this winter. I honestly think he has less stress than most men because he works outside and is, for the most part, master of his time since he works at home.

So many work places are really demeaning with all their rules and regulations, and I can see how it can wear a man down.

Answer from teacher:

Quote:
Every other problem sounds fine. Periods are the groupings of three places (ones, tens, hundreds). The two different periods studied on this page are the ONES and THOUSANDS. In the number 6,862 the 8 is part of the ONES period --- the 6 and 2 are also part of the ONES period. In the number 470,239 the 0 is part of the THOUSANDS period ---- the 4 and the 7 are also part of the THOUSANDS period. So each period has a ones, tens, and hundreds place. Students are asked to identify which period (ONES or THOUSANDS), based on looking at which digit is underlined. Hope this helps. Time for me to go home!!

Hey Ladies,

Popping in from Vancouver. I'm wondering if any of you can give me a good reference to a Naturopath in the Metro area. Would be very helpful if he/she was kid friendly.
My 12 yr old has been has stomach issues for some time now and I have been down the conventional road (including a CT scan today). He can't get into a GI dr. until almost Nov. My heart is telling me that I need to go to a Naturopathic dr. and try a new approach. Anything to help him out.

Regards,
Luli

I'm taking the night off from packing, because I'm dying. Or anyway, I'm very tired. Besides, the car is full for tomorrow. I get to take Friday off. Woo hoo! etc. Moving day is Sunday. I will make it. I will.

Good night.

He doesn't have problems with any of the things on their list; things are rated as 0, 1, or 2 and I didn't put a single 2 down (and I was answering as honestly as possible.) I had my mil fill out a form too because she cares for him 17 hours a week, and she didn't put any 2's down either.

Tomorrow is a meeting with Ryan, myself, and a staff member. Next thursday we're supposed to bring Nico in. I'm getting serious cold feet about it all. I've been asking myself over and over and over "what do you hope to get from this" and the only real answer that I have is peace of mind. But will they be able to deliver that? Or are we opening up a whole new can of worms? I wish I knew.
Sara. Evaluations are hard.

: I hope you find housing soon, and I said it on your blog, but Sophie is so pretty that I had to cry a little! :

Troublemaker! No, I'm not pregnant, but it's funny you mention that, because I miscounted my cycle and thought I was for about a week. I got kind of excited, actually. It was kind of a bummer to find out I wasn't. But we talked about it and decided that when we are settled in PDX and when I have my first month of making a certain amount of money, we'll start trying to get pregnant again. So, it's nice to plan it because it gives me time to get as healthy as I can.

that one really had me going. I checked your blog like mad...
HOw cool that you have a baby making plan. And brave. Bill wants to make a baby making plan and I can only shake and shudder since I only just got to sleeping more than a couple of hours at a time. must recover first.

We will all be thinking of you Sara.
Personally, I think Nico is a mad genius and perfect in every way. But, I do understand that need for confirmation and the way that fear of something "wrong" can eat a hole in you. I hope you get the peace you seek. Keep listening to your mama wisdom, she will guide you better than your busy brain!
