Those blankets are gorgeous! I notice that they sell at a wholesale price in quantities of 15...would anyone like to get together and order a bunch? Am I violating something with that question?
It'll be a challenge for me, especially with 2 little ones underfoot thats for sure...

I'd be in for a blanket or two! Wonder if they need to be in the same size though?

I could be in for at least one blanket too, if we wait until mid october. Dh just started a new job and I can't start spending money until his first paycheque :

That sweater is going to be so nice! I can just imagine it on you Ellaine.

I'm having a really hard time being a sahm lately... the house and kids are more than I can handle. Getting outside helps, but then I come back in and remember all the crap piling up for me to do

It looks like we are moving again soon : which sucks, but we knew this place was temporary so it's not so bad. I am hoping we can get into a co-op before too long, or find a lovely house with a yard for a garden that someone wants to rent to a lovely family for lower than average rent.

You can find some information about forest kindergartens here.
If you google it, a lot more comes up. I just really like the idea of semi-structured and unstructured days outside. I would like to model a shorter program at work after the idea, but I am not sure how I plan to do it just yet. Our current preschool programs are more structured than that.

The mushrooms are gorgeous in Lynn Canyon right now too!

I too am loving wool, especially in all of the rain! Wool sweater, wool long underwear are so good when you are working outside.

Autumn Mama, I love it that your ds1 is interested in fibre. Dd adores wet felting, and it is really, really easy - kind of like playdough with wool. It involves a minimal level of skill to begin, which is right up my alley.

I also managed to find some felting wool in Iceland, so I am going to make little needle-felted gnomes for Christmas trees.

Elaine, how do you knit that pattern?? Is that all fair isle stitching? Man, I am in awe of your skills!

Autumn Mama: how much are the blankets if we do a group order? depending on price I think I would order a couple at least for the kids.

Elisa, I'm so sorry your family is sick! no fun when you are in a foreign land and don't have a place to call home (I always feel homey when I'm sick).

The style of knitting is "Stranded Knitting". The term "Fair Isle" is actually associated with the Scottish style of sweater and is "stranded knitting", but not all "stranded knitting" is Fair Isle. Clear as mud?

You know, way back last year, during most of 2007, we hoped, wished, dreamed, prayed, all of that and more that we would find a rentable, rural acre+ to call our own for awhile. We looked for months at dive after dive, the worst being falling apart trailer-style homes in POOR shape, on dusty patches of earth, no lawn etc asking $16-1700/month!!! Ackkk!!! I felt quite depressed at times, as time moved on, Spring and then Summer came and went and we were no closer to finding the place we wanted.

But I kept this vision in my mind of our new"home" with all of its' attributes, saw my boys playing outside, saw our garden, and just kept that dream alive. Then, on a whim, my DH sent me a listing via Craig's List for the farm home we now rent! We waited and the right place came along, and it was actually affordable for us! We still pinch ourselves, because it is just such a great fit for us, and we've met some truly excellent folks here. So keep those fingers crossed!!!

HELLO! Still here, still thinking of you all, just finding life really busy and so full of ups and downs and lots of changes that it's hard to keep up! The house is still for sale, we're having our 3rd open house this weekend, so cross your fingers for us becoming homeless sooner than later!!!!!! The Barth (our RV) is getting closer and closer to being done, so we're excited about that....but what another hassle, trying to get that done! This weekend we're in Victoria attending my sisters 'call to the bar' ceremony, and celebrating her becoming a full-fledged lawyer! And then we're back home to packing up, hanging out but also kind of waiting to see what's going to happen!!!!!! Oh, and we're all feeling a bit sad that Tiffani and co left today - we weren't quite ready to start saying goodbye! Although we're definitely wishing you SAFE TRAVELS, and an absolute blast in New Zealand!!!!:

Elisa, I feel exhausted hearing about your adventures, I hope life and health settles for you guys soon.

Happy home hunting, happy forest wandering, happy knitting to everyone - hopefully next time I'll be posting about happy house selling!!!!!!!

I'm a bit envious of all of you footloose folks in this tribe! You are having some wonderful adventures....

.... .... ....

Here are some lucky shamrocks to those of you looking for new homes... I hope you find a place to nest soon.

Oh yes, good luck to all those in housing transitions...

For the eczema (can't remember quite who posted), I'd personally rather use a steroid topically than the new-fangled immune modulators, at least in the short term. It's always worth trying hydrocortisone, because that's the same as the cortisol your body makes. The ointment is definitely more effective, and there is an over-the-counter 0.5% strength. If you're concerned about using petroleum-based oitment (and I'm not sure that it is), then you could ask your doc to write for hydrocortisone 0.5 or 1% mixed into anhydrous lanolin, as long as your child isn't allergic to lanolin. I know Jen/gr8ful mom also highly recommends the lanolin on its own for eczema. Calvin refuses to let me put it on him b/c of the smell, so I haven't tried it myself.

We've sometimes had to use a strong steroid cream (shhh : it was mine) but generally only had to use it for a few days to bring things down to a dull roar. Sometimes we used antibiotic cream or ointment with it, and that sometimes helped too, especially on his ear where he gets a crack that is kind of weepy. Over the last week and a half he's been having the worst reaction in a long time - especially on his privates. poor guy. Still not sure what it was. Maybe ham. (Thanks DH).

So tomorrow is Word On The Street and it looks like a blast! Emily was down at Main Library downtown today helping it get all set up. She'll be reading in the Kids Tent as part of the Book Camp group, I think starting from 3:40. There's so much cool stuff going on, I just can't decide what we'll do!!!

oh no, not exhausted erica!! we did just travel from norway to paris and paris to london in the space of a day - and then went grocery shopping and to the fabulous princess di playground... thanks for wishes! we'll see how things go here this week. i think the exhausting part is definitely the selling up and preparing to leave. i was preparing for weeks and weeks! i vastly prefer just doing it. we didn't have much fun in oslo, the girls were very sick, the little one has a voice again, but the tall one is completely mute!! poor child. we would enjoy the quiet if we weren't getting hit when she wants our attention actually we've had a good day of traveling and we are SO excited to finally be in london. it is summery here and we're still in holiday mode

oh, best adventures and settling into a new life in nz, tiffani + family!! we will be sad to find your family and erica's have gone when we return..it is a great loss and i'm trying not to be sad about it.

i did find norwegian wool! for a great price. so i've got several projects rolling...

We made it!!!!

thanks for the nice sentiments, ladies... it is hard to say goodbye to friends, but so blessedly easy to keep in touch these days!!!!

I'm exhausted and ready to order room service, so I'm just going to suggest that anyone who wants to hear about our adventure so far, check my blog post! it's short, and probably incoherent... I'm so, so, so tired... but excited!

more later... sorry to hear about your sickies, we've got that happening here too... :Puke:

With these wool blankets, does anyone know how warm they are? In terms of summer, or winter, or ??
I haven't read anything on here, just a quick...

My friend Shawna had her baby on Saturday. She had to be induced because her bloodpressure was very very high. THey started the induction on Wednesday, so she was probably in labour for about 36 hours and when they checked her she was still 5 cm She went in for a C Sec on Saturday. I was with her through most of this, so I'm REALLY tired. Since the baby has come, she has had to have a support person, as she can't move around much and take care of the baby.
It was a longggg night last night. I only got an hour sleep, baby was really gassy and is still spitting up mucus.
Shawna HATES being in the hospital...its impossible to get any sleep when they poke and prode you every couple hours.
Her milk hasn't come in (not surprising) but baby's blood sugar was really low and they kept checking his blood every few hours which was really stressing for him, so she's been topping up her colostrum with a little donor milk.

She's coming home tomorrow. Well she'll be at my place for 4 or 5 days, then she's moving to Chilliwack.

I hope everybody enjoyed the sun today! I went for a great run and then met up with Ksenia and kids on the beach at Cates Park. What a beautiful day to be outside!! Emily and Wolfie caught a "Googol" of crabs! ;-)
