Chestnut Hill closing down OB

Chestnut Hill is planning on closing down the OB department. This leaves 2 midwife practices without back ups.

Please call CHH and ask for Brooks Turkle's phone and tell him what you think ON TUESDAY 9/2. 215-248-8200 is the main number.

Welcome to the Philadelphia area. When Jeanes Hospital closed their OB they were the last one left in all of NorthEast Philly. I knew it was a matter of time before Chestnut was gone.

The more these smaller hospitals close the less options women have.

I wonder how much warning the practices were given. Jeanes hardly gave any notice to the practices.

I don't know but this isn't the first time this happened with CHH. They were going to close up about a year or so ago also.

So sad. The lack of birthing options for women in this area is disappointing at best.

Both my little brothers (they're 32 and 27 now) were born at CHH...sigh.

It's a sin and a shame. I lived in NE Phila and my only option was Holy Redeemer. They had a wonderful post partum unit but their L&D unit couldn't be more of a "machine."

My good friend just had a vbac with a midwife a CHH.

Are they going to demonstrate again???

Their L&D probably won't ever change. They are set in their ways. They have completely shut out the idea of midwives several years ago. Recently they showed strongly they continue to not welcome midwives. I figure the only way an L&D can change is if they allow in those that bring change. A midwife will bring change but an OB probably will not. So Holy Redeemer probably won't be changing.

I don't think so. From what I've heard, the closing is imminent & they (CHH) is planning to close it 60 days after they send out a press release. So, they're not releasing it to the public until they know for sure when it is closing.

It is another sad day in SE Pennsylvania.

Here's the news article re: the closing http://www.philly.com/inquirer/break...nity_unit.html

My daughter was born there in March. It was my midwife's backup, and since I went into labor at 36 weeks I wasn't able to labor at the birth center. It was a peaceful birth, thanks to my mdwife and CH's staff. I'm sorry that Philadelphia's mothers-to-be are losing one more maternity ward

I totally agree. This is why I'm looking for another place to birth my second baby.

I heard from Barb at Valley Birth Place. The birth center will NOT be closing down and they will still attend homebirths. It still really stinks for Mama's that want to birth in a hospital with a MW.

My mom's been working there for 34 years, most of them in Maternity. It's a sad time indeed.

70 devoted staff members displaced. Moms forced to find another birthing place - very few of which are as close-knit as Chesnut Hill is. All because it's not "profitable". :

Where is Barbara and Valley Birth Place going to use for her back up?

I had a VBAC with her at CHH and it was such a good experience for me.

There is a new birth center in the works in NE Philadelphia. As soon as I have more details, I'll post them here. It is a very sad time to see another OB Dept close but it is also an exciting time to be a Childbirth activist.

That's kind of the stinky part. They will use Holy Redeemer BUT if you need to transport your transport through the ER and once there she can no longer attend you but can be a labor support person. The nice part of that though is Holy Redeemer is so close.

YES! That is exciting. I think it was the beginning of the year that Barb told me about that. I think she's help out or is on the board or something.

Is this the one that the Coalition talks about?

The big question with that...what hospital is going to be the back up? Everything is closed. So I can't imagine what they are doing unless they are opening up without a hospital back up.
