Edmonton weather

I am wondering if anyone in the Edmonton area could give me an idea about the weather. Dh is going to be up there the early part of next week and will be there until sometime in October. I'd like to know what kind of weather is typical for your area so we can make sure that he has the right stuff along. He will be working outside. Thanks!

When does the snow fly?

Depends if you mean for the first time, or when it stays on the ground. I'm north of Edmonton, but many people who have lived here forever claim to have seen snow at least once in every month of the year. I've been checking my blog to see if I mentioned when the first snowfall came, and in 3 years I haven't... at a guess I'd say mid - late October though. Sorry for the lack of concrete help!

This is a link to the weathernetwork's statistics for Edmonton. Looks like there's an average of 2cm of snow in September, with none staying. More falls in October, but only 1cm tends to stay. It's a 30 year sampling of the weather (up to 1991 though) with some neat statistics about number of days where the temperature is below zero, etc.

Thanks! If the weathermen can't accurately predict the weather, I couldn't possibly expect you to. I am thinking that sending along his winter boots might be a good idea just in case. You know, that silly law that if you are prepared it won't happen and if you aren't it will.

I think he already has his Carhartts and other stuff along from working in Boston last winter. I think it will be fine with what he has for this time of year. I don't think he's worked outside below -5 before, but it doesn't seem that is even close to a concern in this situation.

Thanks for the info all!

Yeah, the months of September and October can be either minus 20 and snowy, or plus 25 and beach weather, and everything in between! For sure expect days he'll need hats, gloves and boots, but others, especially at first, could very well be no shirt weather.

When you say -5, is that C or F? October can get pretty chilly here, -20C isn't unheard of.

Ooops. -5 F.

He's in North Dakota now and will cross the border tomorrow morning. We got to connect with him for a night at a family event while camping.

I hope you are all nice up there! This is the furthest away from home that he has worked so far. Ds is really taking it hard. Being five, daddy working in another country might as well be another planet. Poor kiddo.
