DTP info sheet from the 1980's

On my DH's old DTP info sheet it says "WARNING-Some persons should NOT take these vaccines without checking with a doctor...Anyone who has had a serious reaction to DTP shots before, such as:...unusual high-pitched crying..."

Now the sheet for DTaP that they're handing out says: "Talk with your doctor if your child:
...cried non-stop for 3 hours or more after a dose of
DTaP..." and then it says that "Some of these children should not get another dose of pertussis vaccine, but may get a vaccine without
pertussis, called DT."

So my question is, why in the 1970's did they make it a big deal to maybe not vaccinate again from this vaccine reaction but now it's seems like it's not that big of a deal to have that same reaction?

Dr. Mendelsohn, a pediatrician of thirty years, was on the talkshow circuit at the time and the swine flu fiasco of 1976 made people aware of vaccine dangers. The VAERS information bank and reorganizing of who manufactured vaxes as well as revamping the P portion in 1996 in the DPT shot made people complacent. Even though the 1950s polio epidemic was still fresh in everyone's mindset, there were still people around, like me : who yelled, "I told you so!"

REmember the DES scare was still around, there was a doctor's strike in 1976, the c-sec rate was escalating and people were still asking questions, much like they are now...but there is now the internet.

Different vaccine & reaction incidence.

Because they have turned EVIL flipped or just plain don't really care... they have numbers they have to keep up on.

There is information about bad reactions from the P portion of the DPT vaccine that dates back to the 1940s in medical journals. Doctors have known about how neurotoxic it can be.

I do realize that it's a different formula, but it's a reaction that I still hear a lot about. My 2 month old (2 years ago) had that very same reaction and when I brought it up to 3 different doctors and an NP they all told me that there was no way it was a vax reaction and basically made me feel like an idiot.

Max,
You're not an idiot. My fat healthy nursing dd quit eating and screamed for a month after her first shots. Do you know how many times I asked that man if it could be related to her vaxes since it started about 3 hrs. after her shots? He never admitted it. Thank God she was not permanently damaged. Course I left that particular medical establishment and began to question what I had been so blind about before. I think if my ds had had the DTP it would have killed him.

My GP who we see now is okay with not vaxing and actually said to me after I told him about dd's reaction that if I ever decided to vax we SHOULD NOT give the DTP to my son, since reactions are often worse in subsequent kids.

There are honest docs out there... I had to go through several to find one though.

I'm glad your DD is okay! I know that I should shop around some more for a dr. who will at least no grill me on why we're not vaxing. And I do believe that IF we ever do vax's that DS will NOT be getting the DTaP!
