So Im sitting here playing with yarn like I always do. and I decide I am just gonna wing it and come up with a simple plain preemie dress.

Its very basic and super easy.. so it got be thinking.. someone has to have done this before right?

So if I come up with something out of my own brain and post it, what if its out there somewhere ?

i want to share it.. but i don't know if i can lol

The ppl in my crochet group don't know...

You need to join ravelry- this discussion comes up frequently.

My understanding is that most knitters accept that there are a finite number of ways to combine a knit and purl stitch, and equally that most crocheters have come to the same understanding- the chances are that no matter what you come up with, someone else has done it first. This is fine, good, OK and dandy. Therefore, write your pattern in good faith and publish it, copyrighted as necessary.

IF, on the other hand, you know that you have been directly inspired by someone else, manners dictate that you acknowledge this. At that point, I'd publish as a freebie, with links to the original source.

NOTE: these are my opinions. I am not a lawyer. You might also want to check back through archived posts here, as I know we've had the discussion before.

Flapjack's right. There are a finite number of stitches, and some very popular things to make, so some "copycatting" (although not really) is going to happen. Google "Mary Jane booties" and take a gander at all the different versions.
