Mucus plug - what does it mean?

Well, I'm pretty sure I've lost my mucus plug - about a half dollar size blob of blood tinged mucus. Ewww! What does that mean? Could it still be a few days? My husband is planning to go to his grandmother's viewing tomorrow, and it's three hours away, so he'll be gone for about 8 hours (although he will come right home if I call, but it's still a 3-3.5 hour drive). I'm getting nervous that he's going to miss the birth!

I don't *think* I am having contractions yet, but I am very crampy and the cramps are getting worse.

I had that Friday morning, and then had bear hug contractions all day at midnight I started to get real contractions and they continued into the morning and petered off closer to the afternoon (I probably would've had her that morning but I was tired and stressed out as dh hadn't been studying up on the birth as much as he should have and I felt very alone and didn't even want him at the birth, after a good cry and expressing my feelings to him the next morning my labor was able to progress), we went to the beach to walk and start some contractions and that didn't work too much so we stopped at circuit city to walk some more and after a half hour walking around the store that did it they started coming back. Went home and timed them, they were around 7 min apart and they too continued to the next morning when they intensified at 9:30 (active labor) I laid down at 12:45 and felt shakey so I had dh check me and sure enough I was just about complete, he couldn't give me an exact answer so I was telling him to check again to be more specific and just then my water broke, 12:55, got everything ready to birth her on the floor of my bedroom and then the contractions pushed her down more and more those were more intense as they were also moving her through my cervix, then came the uncontrollable pushing contractions, those are the most intense contractions and so INCREDIBLY painful! They took over my body and forced me to push HARD and in another 20 min she came flying out into grandmas arms at 1:45pm!

Sooo mucous on friday morning baby on Sunday afternoon... hope that helps.

(I probably would've had her early sat. morning but I was tired and stressed out as dh hadn't been studying up on the birth as much as he should have and I felt very alone and didn't even want him at the birth, after a good cry and expressing my feelings to him (basically telling him he was a dirt bag, to which he agreed and immediately began looking things up) the next morning my labor was able to progress)

For me...
I woke with blood tinged mucous (my plug for sure) at 7am. I had contractions all day and then after my ds went to sleep at 10pm there was no turning back! The baby was born at 5am, so less then 24 hours after I lost my plug

Different women loose their plugs at different points so it doesn't mean anything in particular other than you are dilating or effacing enough for some to come out. It does however regenerate so you may loose more later.

With my first pregnancy I lost my plug (and a lot of blood) several days before she was born (planned c-section).
with my second and third pregnancies I lost the plug in stages during active labor.

That is all anecdotal though.

With my first 2 I lost it super early. With my DD I lost it about 24 hrs before delivery and started early labor then. Went into hard labor the next night and that lasted 44 min...... like Megan said it all depends on the lady and the pregnancy.

When I lost mine, my midwife said that I would probably go into labor within the next three days. I did. From what I've read, it can happen any time and does vary, but three days is about average.
