A child sized scarf, garter stitch.
It changed width a couple of times because I kept accidentally adding stitches. But I learned how to do decreases too!

Back in the dark ages, you mean, or the renaissance? First time round it was twenty million scarves, none of which I ever finished. My personal version of the Enlightenment were these booties, which are from a Debbie Bliss pattern that was published for free in a UK parenting magazine when I was pregnant. God bless Debbie Bliss- her patterns drive me insane on a regular basis, but if it hadn't been for that then I'd probably never have seen the light.

The Punk Knitters soaker pattern. It turned out OK, just not the right size for DD1 at the time.

Oh my gosh...when I was 12? A sweater, blue, acrylic, puke.

This time around, however, I jumped right into babay knitting. A hat that was knit on flats, then sewn up. I finished it, then bought my first circs and knit a Booga bag. From there, I never knit on straights again.

I love knitting and felting bags. So useful, and you can try fun colors without worrying about how it may look on, kwim?

A wool soaker. It's workable, both DD and DS wore it and I'll use it on the new babe. Lots of obvious flaws, especially in the waistband ribbing. I learned to knit just so I could afford wool covers for our kids. Now it's an obsession.

A hat and booties when I was expecting my first. Both were knit flat and seemed. I bought a kit from Michaels. She was 9lbs and could wear neither. Or maybe I waited too long to put them on, like when she was 2 weeks old instead of right away!

A Kitty Pi Bed

Size 6 needles are perfect for cotton dishcloths - somewhere in the "free patterns" link at the top of the forum there are great, easy dishcloth patterns!

My first was a dishcloth.

Mine was a soaker, I used a tiny birds pattern. I wasn't thinking I would have any great results but I think it came out great-you can see it on my dd here (about three years ago ).

The Landscape Shawl from FiberTrends by Evelyn Clark, knit in Cherry Tree Hill Shetland DK Potluck on #8 Addis. I knit it in like 5 days. It is still on of my most treasured objects.

dish cloths. I still love to knit dish cloths. it's good to try out a new technique. they don't take long to complete, and they're useful.

A tiny little baby hat for my niece when I was 17. She was too big for it by the time she came home, but I learned a lot. Then it was like 5 years later and I made a "Harry Potter" scarf for my BFF that she still wears.

I got serious when I was pregnant and did the "1932 Soaker" pattern.

I took a class...we did a 'patchwork' pillow, all in garter stitch in a nice chunky yarn. I liked it because I got lots of knitting practice, practiced casting on & binding off for each patch, and practice joining.

My first real project was the Einstein coat in the Sally Melville book, The Knit Stitch. I made it for dd who I think was 2.5 yo at the time & she wore it for about 3 years. It was a great project - not too involved, very forgiving, quick because of the size & straightforward directions. It's the one thing I've made that I can't pass along to my niece .

My first project was a big ripple afghan for my mom. It has cured me of ever wanting to knit an afghan again, as it took forever.

Well, a garter stitch square, under my gran's tuition. Then she helped me make some clothes for my Sindy doll, and my cousin's Action Man. The in Jr high I started knitting again for a bit, and my first project was one of those 80's tank top sweaters. Then when I started knitting again in my twenties, it was a hat and an all in one teddy bear outfit with attached mittens and booties for my nephew. A Debbie Bliss pattern. I would not suggest starting to knit with a Debbie Bliss pattern, I still can't believe I made it through (I hadn't knit for 15 years at that point!). Haven't stopped since though!

I learned to knit so I could make longies. My first pattern was the tiny bird organics longie pattern. But for some reason I used a nylon yarn (knew I needed wool- just didn't want to use something complicated) so they aren't functional. I did a great job knitting them- it was the seaming that got me. So whenever I can I eliminate that step-even if it means rewriting the whole pattern. I hate seaming! Oh and they were on size 4s- so they took a long time..... That was last fall. Since them I have become a full fledged knitter- what a fun (and expensive) year!

child size scarf in both garter and stockinette, so I could practice. IT came out very badly! I was increasing, decreasing, all sorts of things. I ripped it out, started over, and it was much better ;-) I then started knitting soakers for my unborn baby. I figured if there were mistakes I wouldn't really care. I did makea few mistakes but really, even my first ones came out pretty nice. Just a lot of FROGGING!

First thing I ever knit was baby botties when i was like 10 for a second cousins baby.

Then I didn't knit again until just recently, In the past 2 months Ive started knitting a womans sweater, baby boties, hat, mitts and pants and just finished a scarf for my dads gf...I blame pregnancy nesting hormones!
