Moving to Maine

Finally after years and years of wanting to do it (talking about 7 years now) we are finally ready to make the move to Portland Maine. :
SO I need some info.
Homeschool groups,
Are there any Earthscout groups?
Any "pagan" family groups?
Anything fun that happens in the winter (as we will most likely be moving in Jan/Feb) that I can get the kids into.
We are leaving a very active homeschool community and lots of friends, we want this transition to go as smoothly as possible for the kids... any thoughts ideas??

I'm in Bangor so not much help myself...but...check out http://soulemama.typepad.com/soulemama/
She lives in the Portland area and I believe she unschools her kids. It's a wonderful blog with lots of information about the goings on in the area.

I live in Saco which is only 20 mins south of Portland, definitely read Soule Mama's blog, she talks about all the cool stuff in Portland. Also there is a Southern Maine Mamas board that I would be happy to PM you the link to since its a private board is a good way to connect with other AP mamas.

As for homeschooling, there is a yahoo group that is good, we don't homeschool but I have friends who do.

Winter time drags on but if you are outdoor types depending on the snow, you can ski, snowshoe, stuff like that. There are several farms and places in winter you can go to pretty cheaply. Also the children's museum in Portland is popular to hang at in winter.

Welcome...soon!! We also moved here in the dead of winter, wow was that a wake-up call:. We also are home/unschooling and live an hour west of Portland. We're part of an Southern Maine Unschooling group, let me know if you want to hop on board.

We find ourselves outside quite a bit more in the winter due to the wonderful lack of bugs, just need to bundle up! There is a great ski-place 30mins north of us that has great deals for homeschoolers, called King Pine.

Good luck packing,
Sarah
