Cal/Mag supplements after birth?

I've been taking Floradix cal/mag supplement to prevent the horrible leg cramps I'd been getting, and it's working brilliantly. I'm not sure whether I would need to still take this after I've had the baby? It's pretty expensive and I'm sure once I've had the baby I'm not going to always remember to take it, but the cramps were awful and I really wouldn't want them to start up again, especially because the sidecar cot we're getting will make it a bit harder for me to get out of the bed quickly (althought the lack of a huge belly should make it easier). Have any of the repeat mamas got any experience of this?

: I don't have an answer for you but I'm curious too! I'm also taking a cal/mag for overnight calf cramps and general health and I'm not sure if these are nutrients I'll be lacking after the birth as well.

Be a good thing to ask your care provider about.

I always take some because I'm prone to leg cramps without even being pregnant but I have to double or triple the amount I take during pregnancy to ward off 'most' not all of my leg/calf/foot cramps. So I imagine I will back off to a lesser amount once this is over.

My mw mentioned keeping up with the iron and calcium/magnesium after birth - she said that I should continue to drink RRL because of the iron and easily assimilated calcium - calcium is supposed to prevent PP hemorrhage.

My last midwife has me take cal/mags to reduce the aftercramping of the uterus. These after pains weren't even noticable to me after #1, but after #2 they were REALLY painful... I'd say about as bad as middle labor (and even some final labor pains!). Since your on #1, you might not need it for the after pains, but it certainly wouldn't hurt to keep it up for at least the first week and slowly go off (just in case going from taking to not taking it might cause the cramping to return), but I'm not a midwife, herbalist, mineral expert or anything like that.
