New Here, Introducing Myself/Total Knitting Neophyte/I Think I Need A Swift

Hi everyone. New to this forum. I'm just learning to knit, unless you count the Girl Scouts stitches I have forgotten. I have tried for years to teach myself or learn from friends, but my lack of time and patience always gets in the way, so as a birthday present to myself, I'm taking a knitting class at our local independent knitting/yarn store. The class starts next week.

I feel like a total dork saying this, but I just balled my first skein of yarn and my arms are killing me! :yawning: I'm already thinking I need a swift, which confirms my fears about the addictive and expensive nature of this hobby!

Nice to meet everyone!

Most knitting shops will wind it for you, for free if you bought the yarn there, and for a small fee if you didn't.
I actually love to wind yarn into a ball. I find it really relaxing.

why us a swift when you can use a man?

I often make dh help me ball yarn. Knitting can be as expensive or cheap as you want it to be.

Did you enjoy winding the ball? Or, would you say it was more of a necessary task that precedes the real fun? If it's the latter, I would not bother with the swift. You can always have the yarn shop wind the hanks for you. Or, you are always welcome to borrow my swift and winder (I don't get them out that often--a week would not be a big deal). Another thing to consider is whether having just the swift is worth it. You'd still be doing all of the winding-not quite as tedious and tiresome as wrapping the hank around a couple of chairs, but still a chore. Add a winder to the swift, and you're probably going to spend $90-$100.
-OR-

You could show this to your DH. With his skills, I bet he could have it done in less than an hour!

Oh, and you might check out knittinghelp.com for some awesome videos on just about every knitting skill you could hope for at this point. She has a great look at my favorite cast-on: Long-tail, or figure eight. Surf the site for a bit. You'd be surprised at how much you could pick-up from that one alone.

Exciting!!

Ladies, I think you're missing the point. If I read the OP right, we've got another addict on our hands

OP, I agree with the others. Don't spend good yarn money on a swift Save it for a spinning wheel....
