what is it? it's the pneumonia shot, right? what is this that i hear about meningitis? for some reason, i am terrified of meningitis. i don't know anyone whose had it nor have i heard of anyone getting it in my area. but i'm still scared of it. i haven't vaxed my son past 6mths, please help me tell myself that this isn't a shot he needs.

Prevnar is a vaccine against 7 antibiotic resistant strains of the Pneumococcal bacteria. There are a total of 90 strains of this type of bacteria.
But since they came out with his vaccine, 2 new antibiotic resistant strains have popped up and they are doing a new vaccine with those. (at least last I heard, can't find where I saw that)

Everyone has this bacteria in their nasal passages. Anything you hear about it helping against getting ear infections is complete rubbish and a marketing scheme.

The link I posted is pretty easy to read if you stick with it. The biggest issue with these bacterial vaccines is serotype replacement. The vaccine wipes out the strains included in it, but the problem is that other strains of the bacteria take over. The overall incidence of meningitis is not reduced and we get other nice bonuses like increases in MRSA (staph). This is also happening with the Hib vaccine.

Get a copy of the vax insert from your dr.

Prevnar seems to have an unusually high rate of seizures reported after this vaccine, some deaths.

More info here,

This a rather new vaccine just licensed 2/17/2000

All recipients of this vaccine may as well be referred to as the guinea pigs.
