I had to share this one...

I had an apt yesterday at our best childrens hospital to see a specialist for my son due to an injury & before the Dr came in the nurse came in to take down my son's history. She asks me about his vaccination status. I start to gear up for a fight of course & tell her that he's vaccinated until 6 months, then broke out in a rash so we've left things & I'll deal with it before school entry (which I don't plan to do anything, it just saves a fight when I say this). The nurse then says to me says to me "you know you don't have to vaccinate him." to which I said that I knew (we're in Canada). Then she said sternly to me, and looked me directly in the eye "You should be very careful". I was shocked. I didn't know what to say to her. She left the room after that & my husband said to me "what the hell was that all about? Is she telling you not to vaccinate Hayden?" I couldn't believe it, my mouth about hit the floor, my first encounter with someone in the medical field that actually said something to me about it, & it was at one of our best children's hospitals & it was in the pediatric dept! I am regretting it now, but I should have asked why, but I was so ready to battle with her about my decision that I didn't know what to say after that.

I just had to share this, I am still in disbelief.

Wow. I am shocked.

Impressive! I wonder what she would have said if you had asked more.. she seemed very anti-vax (which isn't a bad thing!) I'd just be interested to see if she has seen stuff first hand since she works in a children's hospital.

I don't know what she would have said. She was a very nice lady, in her 50's & was joking with us while we filled out the forms, but all of a sudden she went from very nice, to very serious when she said that to me. I went to kind of look for her after a while since we sat & waited a while before the Dr actually came in the room but she had gone for lunch. I think I was actually scared to ask her why. All I could say at the time was "ah...ok". I was super happy though that my husband came with me to the apt. He's always thought I was crazy for stopping vaccinations, but after yesterday I'm sure he's on board with me.

We have to go back for a follow-up in January, if she's there I'm definately asking her. When we got to the pediatric dept I actually knew the receptionist so if I dug deep enough I'm sure I could get her name.

I am kicking myself now for not asking. I told my GF what happened & she yelled at me "WHY DIDN'T YOU ASK "WHY??" & all I could say was I was truly in shock & dumbfounded. Everytime I've had to answer to Dr's or nurses about his status (he's 2.5 years old) they always look at me like I'm nuts. I had to take him to a pediatrician one time & he said to me "it's fine if he's not in daycare but if he has to go in daycare you'll have to resume immunization" & then when my son's injury happened in May & we were at the hospital the nurse looked disgusted with me that I stopped vaccinations. All my friends think I'm nuts as well for my decision, but deep down inside I know my decision is the best decision & this confirmed it.

What a totally shocking experience. Me and dh always joke around about how a nonvaxing parent could bring their child in bleeding out and the doc would say, "do you want to vaccinate today?"

I doubt the nurse has any information that others on this board don't have. She's anti-vaccine just like you and most of us on this board, for a ton of reasons. She's seen kids come in with vaccine reactions. We may not have as much first hand experience with that but we know it happens all the time.

Good for her for actually saying something that she believes in and as "a medical professional"! But WOW!!

Now that's refreshing!

Well this is refreshing!
It's a wonder to me though, that more nurses aren't like this- they must encounter tons of adverse reactions.

Awesome!

Wow, that is very surprising! I wouldn't have been able to keep my mouth shut, I would have asked her right there what she knows!
