dye for baby's blankies

My 2.8yo DS wants his sibling to have "blankies" like his, but a different color. (Doesn't matter much what color.) I think this is a great present for DS to make with my help before the baby comes. We use Gerber cotton flat-folds as a blankie (they started out as burp cloths when DS was tiny, but then he became attached to them and now we have a ton!) and I'm wondering what we could use to dye them that will hold up to many many washings?

I'm not the crafty sort, so please be specific about what to use, where to find it and, if needed, *how* to use it. TIA!

You can buy dye from Dharma Trading that should really last.

You can also dye with things like beets.I haven't done it but there is lots of info out there if you search it.

Dharma or Pro Chemical Procion Dyes will hold up. This is all I use.

Thanks for the suggestions. One more question...DH suggested we use some of the Gentian Violet we already have sitting around. If I do this, should I "set" the color with vinegar or something? Would GV even work??
