2 year old in Asheville for 2.5 days - UPDATE

Hi!

We've decided to take a short trip to Asheville very soon and would love some ideas of what to do!

We have a 2.5 year old. He keeps talking about going on a train, so something like that would be fun, but we are open to whatever. What suggestions do you have?

No trains in Asheville, but there's The Health Adventure downtown, and the WNC Nature Center in east Asheville that would surely be fun for your little sprite.

I second the Nature Center. There are no trains but I've heard this is pretty cool - http://www.lazoomtours.com/. If you're into hiking at all there are some nice trails at the State Arboreteum or UNCA to mess around on. Actually there's a trail at the Nature Center too now that I think about it. If you're around Friday night, kids (of all ages!) like the drum circle at Pritchard Park - it's right in downtown, anyone can tell you where it is.

There are also some great playgrounds - one on Azalea Rd about a mile past the Nature Center, one at Carrier Park.

The local free paper - http://www.mountainx.com/ does a decent job of advertising special things going on too.

There is a train ride about 50 miles from asheville if your guy is into it enough to make the drive worth ithttp://gsmr.com.

I second the nature center and health adventure too...we've been going to one or the other about once a week since dd was about 2 and we still aren't bored with it. Hope you have a good visit.

Another thing to keep in mind is that Mondays are kinda quiet downtown. I think the Health Adventure is closed on Mondays and a lot of restaurants are too. Checking the MountainXpress is a good idea, like already suggested.

I know you may have left already, but perhaps for future visits or others, there is the Tweetsie Railroad, which is a little day trip from Asheville; http://www.tweetsie.com/

I also wanted to mention that there are some nice stores that are kid friendly an Asheville, the green store Nest Organics on Lexington, and The littlest Birds in West Asheville

We just got back home today and we had a really wonderful time! :

Thank you for all the suggestions!

We went to the Nature Center, went apple picking, went to the Health Adventure, went to Littlest Birds and Nest Organics, and otherwise just had a great time wandering around downtown and popping into great shops and eating some wonderful food. Wow, the chocolate at French Broad Chocolate Lounge is amazing!! Between Nest Organics and chocolate, I was in heaven!

That's so cool to hear you enjoyed yourselves!

Yep... for the most part, we have our own little shangri la right here in WNC. Definitely a foodies paradise.
