Casting On Socks

I've have cast on and am on my first row of my first pair of socks. I have used dpn's before for shortie/longie legs, but have never cast onto them before.

So how long until it stops feeling like I'm fighting the needles to the death? They are sliding and the stiches are slipping and it's all too tight/loose (it changes)

This gets better right? There is a reason people like knitting socks? And it's not cuz you're all crazy?

You can always cast on your sts on one of the dpns only or any other needle of the same size then move the stitches to your dpns, being careful not to twist.

I did... it's getting through the first row that killing me... everything is fighting me and it's making my hands sore to push on through. This is depressing.

I personally hate dpns. It takes me like an inch or 2 before things start going better. Are you using bamboo or metal? Metal sucks. Bamboo is more grippy on yarn but still slides on me. I am getting ready to give 2 socks on 1 circ a whirl and think that will be a much better way to go.

Woohoo! Got through the first inch and it's finally setlling into a routine. It's also my first time doing k1p1 ribbing.... I"m so porud of myself!

(Added bonus, found out my Sean Sheep Walmart yarn : is self striping!)

Yay! I usually find the first couple of rows are tricky (the bigger the sock, the more tricky), but after that it's a breeze.

3-4 rows. 1/2" at most.

Welcome to the best addiction EVER. I can whip out a pair of socks in 2 weeks, and it is an awesome high. Especially when your other project is the "OMG it takes forever One For the Whole Clan Aran" from KnitPicks. In the largest chubby man size. (I have decided that if I ever need to marry again, it will be to a refuge from Munchkin Land.)

I'm beginning to see the attraction...I'm about 2" in and I can't believe how fast it's adding up. This could seriously be a problem.

I need like 12 pairs of bed socks, right?

Absolutely

socks are great

Beware of SSS, though . It's nabbed me on more than one occasion.

I feel your pain the first inch or so, too, BTW!

Okay, what's SSS?
SSS = second sock syndrome.

Some people have it because they somehow get stalled on the second sock and don't want to complete it.

I'm the opposite: once the first is done I usually fly through the second one, excited to have it done too.

Some people knit 2-at-a-time on long circulars (there's also a method to do it on DPNs, but people don't use it very often) to avoid SSS. I'm doing a pair that way but it feels like it's taking forever. Or maybe it's just because DH has great big feet.

Ahhh, yes the pattern I'm using includes the instructions to cast on the second sock before getting up to avoid this.

I've started the heel, wish me luck!
