Looking for good pediatrician in TOLEDO

My sister is in desperate need of a good pediatrician.

Her son is 2.5 years old and is developing some special needs (specifically speech/hearing). She just wants a pediatrician who will listen to what she has to say and help her form a plan to help her son. Right now her ped isn't paying any attention to my sister's concerns about Vincent's speech (or lack thereof).

Also, Vincent is sick almost all of the time. He's been hospitialized with a life threatening kidney infection and also has sore throats all.the.time. Her current pediatrician hasn't addressed these issues either (other than drowning him with antibiotics/medications). My sister is ready to turn to alternative/natural medicine because she sees how it works for me and my son, but she doesn't know where to find a pediatrician like this where she lives and I don't live in Toledo so I am no help.

I told her how I found a wonderful pediatrician here with your help, I hope you can help her as well.

Well, personally, we go to Dr. Valarie Stricklen at UT Medical Center Pediatrics. She's always gone along with us without fussing when we wanted to pursue something out of the box...we do an alternative vaccine schedule, breastfeed for a long time (she is also a breastfeeing mom, if that makes any difference), and we've declined some of her recommendations of flu shots and Vitamin supplements, and she's been fine with it. Now we don't have any major medical problems, but she has referred us when we needed to see specialists, etc. We have also seen Dr. Krol in that office, and he also has a really great bedside manner... I don't know if others have opinions that differ, but we've always been happy there. Hope she finds someone she really likes!

I am very happy with Dr. michael Pappas in Sylvania. He is also accepting of selective/delayed vaccines, Extended breastfeeding (though one of his nurses was not real supportive but I made it known and that seems to have stopped) and parents as the primary source of knowledge as to if something is going on with the child. Does not push meds at all.

For the speech/hearing issues she should call on Early intervention and Help Me Grow. Each county has their own branch. They are for all kids 0-3 that need extra assistance regardless of income (many people tend to think they are for low income only) We live in Wood County and the services Sage was able to receive were great. Free special-needs preschool (twice a week, transportation included) home visits etc.

Dr. Mills from PeditriCare Associates is really good at more challenging situations. He loves to learn new things, and is a really intelligent Dr. He's also good at listening to the parents. One thing to take into consideration, he is very strong on vaccinations though. They're good about alternative vacc. schedules and selected vaccs I think. You sister might want to look for a second opinion before leaving the practice she's with. My sister went through the same thing you're describing (delayed speech/hearing etc.)

I specialize in children with autism and developmental delays and I also second getting in touch with Early Intervention and Help Me Grow asap!! You don't want him to get too far behind his peers!!

You also might to go to a developmental ped. like Dr Pasch, Dr Quinn, or Dr Walker to make sure it's just a language delay.

Another good ped would be Dr Woodhouse, who is open to alternative approaches and ideas.

Hi Carla,

What age children do you work with? I have a friend who might really benefit from speaking to you. Would you mind if I gave her your number? Her son is about 10 (I think) and was just diagnosed with Asperger's. She felt this might be what was going on, but is still rocked by the diagnosis.

Just wanted to add, I love Dr. Woodhouse, he is who I see, but he is not a Ped. He is family practice, he is really thourough, open to alternative approach, huge breastfeeding advocate, non or selective vax supportive (will also get in batches of single disease vaccines as patients request) ect.

Just wanted to let the OP know though that he is not a ped. Great Doc though

I will add Dr. Dvorak to the list, he's with Perrysburg Pediatrics. He is ok with the no vax issue, doesn't push antibiotics and is very open to alternative treatments. I don't know if he's accepting new patients, I am not a big fan of the other Dr.s in the practice though, the other few I have met really pushed the vax thing.
