Mini Vent/SO Dolls w/Bottles

So...while I understand it's our culture that causes pretty much every baby doll to come with a bottle it's just a tad bit ridiculous that the baby DUCK toy comes with a bottle...ducks aren't even mammals! They don't drink milk!

Yup, the "Fur Real Friend" duck toy drinks from a bottle...

Do you think that in time less dolls will come with bottles automatically?

ETA: DH wanted me to emphasize that the doll doesn't just COME with a bottle...that's the whole point. It quacks and gulps when you feed it.

honestly? no. If young humans can be indoctrinated that all babies drink from a bottle, they will think that is normal. Don't you know formula is good for the economy?
Sorry. I think I'm a little bitter today.

Bitter is a flavor I enjoy every once in a while. Feel happy again soon though!

Do you think the formula industry really has that much influence on the toy industry? I would like to believe that if our society started viewing BF as the norm and formula as an unfortunate but sometimes necessary exception to the norm than toys might start to reflect that attitude. ETA: Especially if that meant bottles ended being sold as a separate accessory (because toy companies LOVE their accessories)!

In regards to the duck, I would write a letter to the company not necessarily about lactivism but because they are miseducating children...unless of course that bottle is supposed to contain ground up worms.

LOL! I'm laughing my butt off at the idea of a baby duck drinking milk

Honestly, I see why a kid might feed a toy puppy or kitten with a bottle. I've bottle-raised orphaned kittens before, and people are REALLY fascinated by them. I guess it's that sense of being able to be "mommy" to a species that you wouldn't normally be able to nurture in that way.

But I agree that it seems too many dolls are being sold with bottles. It would be nice to see more little girls pretending to nurse their babies ... though a lot of them probably don't KNOW anything about nursing ...

My daughters understand not to ask for toys that come with bottles. You can get any number of animals with a bottle, from a Barbie wildlife doctor set that has a baby jaguar to a plush My Little Pony which is also wearing a diaper.

I do think it serves to normalize formula feeding.

I've tossed bottles a couple of times. This perplexed my xFIL quite a bit. When we moved back in '06, I bought the older two newborn Cabbage Patch Kids, and didn't remove the bottles from the packages. Rob threw the boxes away and his dad went into the trash and took the bottles off the backing and brought them in. I explained to him that I had thrown them away on purpose, because I don't wish to normalize formula feeding for my children. He asked what we were going to do when Bobbie got into trouble at school for lifting her shirt and breastfeeding her doll.

That brought on a patient explanation from my then-husband of how, since we intended to home school the children it would never be an issue.

Argh! DD was given a toy puppy with a bottle. I've now hidden the bottle!

Although the puppy's pretty noisy, maybe I'll hide that too!!!

I don't think having baby bottles necessarily normalizes formula feeding. As a kid I alternated from bf'ing my babies and bottle feeding them. I was probably a pumping momma . My husband was a dog and my baby was a bear, so we were all kinds of crunchy back then. I also worked as a scientist and a spy.

Hilarious! DD has a dog, pig, cow and baby as her babies. She also tries to nurse from the pig and cow.

I completely equate the formula companies to cigarette companies and I feel there is a huge conspiracy to undermine breastfeeding from the growth charts to the kids toys. I believe that they totally have a hand in everything.

(Of course my husband and I have several conspiracy theories so... ya know... we may be a little "silly" in the head)

My dd sees her sister drink out of bottles when I am not at home. She knows that bottles are for when momma can't be there. She nurses her baby dolls and has as many baby slings as I do. (3) The other day she was asking where she put her breast pump, because she wanted to pump for her baby.

The duck with the bottle is ridiculous.

Yeah, that I totally get. Though, just a little while back a mama posted here about a vet Barbie or something that had puppies and a bottle to feed them with...even though she also came with the puppies' MOM! ACK! Heaven forbid we let the mama dog *nurse* her own puppies! Gasp! That's scandalous!

If a toy comes with a bottle, we usually throw the bottle away, too. Sometimes, if it's a nicer bottle (the lid comes off, larger size, etc) I'll save them--they are great for drizzling melted chocolate on top of cookies, etc. I just repeat quite often "We don't use bottles to feed babies in this family!" I figure if brainwashing works so well the other way, it'll work to my advantage, too!

Well, I'm not sure about TX, but here in FL it wouldn't be a problem....FL Statute 383.015 says that, "A mother may breastfeed her baby in any location, public or private, where the mother is otherwise authorized to be, irrespective of whether the nipple of the mother's breast is uncovered during or incidental to the breastfeeding. "

So I'd just like to see a public school teacher dare to confront my dd about nursing her dolly....obviously she would be protected by this law!

LOL! Actually, we homeschool also, but it would almost be worth it to send her to public school just so she could be a lactivist!

(and since I had Google open, I noticed that young lactivists in Texas need not fear, either!

Texas Breastfeeding Law:
Quote:
§ 165.001. LEGISLATIVE FINDING. The legislature finds
that breast-feeding a baby is an important and basic act of nurture
that must be encouraged in the interests of maternal and child
health and family values. In compliance with the breast-feeding
promotion program established under the federal Child Nutrition Act
of 1966 (42 U.S.C. Section 1771 et seq.), the legislature
recognizes breast-feeding as the best method of infant nutrition.

§ 165.002. RIGHT TO BREAST-FEED. A mother is entitled
to breast-feed her baby in any location in which the mother is
authorized to be.

Yeah, I saw that thing in a Target a few weeks ago, and was angry that I didn't have my camera to take a picture of the ridiculousness.
