Fabric for an apron

I am planning on making an apron for a long time friend of mine for being my doula to my next birth. My friend is going to have to travel a ways and has two kids of her own. She has mentioned wanting a apron. So I thought I would make her one as a thank you present.

My question comes in, that I noticed that most apron are made out of think cotton type material. I'm a bit of a novice sewer. So I don't know what the material is called. I want to purchase some nice organic, cute fabric, but I will have to do this on-line so I really need to know what the formal or correct name of the fabric is. For ordering purposes.

Also if you guys know of any great organic fabrics on-line that would help. I had some great ones book marked, but had them get erased

Oh yeah and a pattern too. But I think I can manage with out one pretty easily, just thought I'd throw that in. I know I'm asking a lot.

Thanks in advance.

I have aprons made from canvas, denim, twill or even just plain old quilting cotton (which can be lined or unlined). Your best choice of prints will be in the quilting cotton, which you can line with a complimentary/contrasting cotton to make a reversible apron if you like.

Pattern isn't difficult if you own an apron yourself, since they are usually one piece bodies with straps and possibly pockets.

you grow girl has a super cute and easy apron pattern. I dunno about fabrics though-- I would consider what she'd be using it for and go from there. for example, I'd love to have an apron made out of terry cloth for the kitchen since i'm always wiping my hands on my pants.

But I'd like to have one made of canvas for the garden.

My sister made me a great apron from a towel--she just gathered the top of the towel onto a long tie made from quilters' cotton.
