Looking for Midwives in San Diego...

Thread Starter
HI,
I was wondering if anyone could recommend some midwives in San Diego, Ca. I've found a few that I intend to contact, but I'm sure there are more out there. I especially would like (but am not limited to) a midwife with a christian or jewish belief system and a mainly hands-off approach. As this is my sixth child, I pretty much know what I need! Any suggestions, however, especially if accompanied by a description of your experience, would be appreciated.
Thank you!
M.

There is a thread from earlier in the year that lists many of the homebirth midwives. For some reason, I only can go back 3 pages in this forum - I think I missed a change to the set-up of MDC.

A starting place (though none are particularly religious):
Vickii Gervais
Brooke Ray
Gerry Ryan
Ama Mama (a practice in North County)

I bet one of these fabulous midwives could point you in the direction of what you are looking for.

Good Luck!

ama mama actually closed down last month, but the midwife (barb) is still in practice, you can find her at amamamamidwifery.com

whats cool about her is that she now will come to your house instead of you having to travel anywhere to do prenatals!

There is a "christain mw" in SD. No exerience with her though. I used one of the MWs suggested so far and have interview or spoken with the others. PM me if you want more info.

There is also a more holistic mw. There is also a mw team that practices in Encinitas but they are a more medically minded. I don't have their names but I remember they were really easy to find with a search engine.

I was able to find about 12. I posted them all on a previous post in this forum (FYT). I don't have this info on hand anymore.

Vickii Gervais is my midwife and I highly recommend her. I was born Jewish and became Christian later in life, so I totally get wanting that influence, and Vickii has neither, but she is so focused on what you need as a birthing mama, it doesn't matter. Good Luck!

Vickii was my midwife for my last 3 babies and I really, really like her approach to trusting the birth process and a mother's ability to know what she needs. I met with 4 or 5 midwives when I was pregnant w/our now 7 year old and liked Vickki the best by far :-)

If you have any Q's you can PM me. Good luck!

I found the website for the Christain MW. I haven't spoken or met with her so I don't know much about her:

Michelle Freund is a wonderful midwife. I believe she is a Christian although did not force her religion on me, (I am not of that faith). She is everything I wanted in a midwife. Warm, experienced, capable, knowledgeable, softly spoken, spiritual, hands-off when needed, respectful, easy to talk to.

we interviewed michelle, and would have loved to go with her, but we are in corona and figured that she wouldn't get here in time, as we were expecting a quick birth (we were right!). we really liked her though!

a good friend of mine had a baby with her two years ago, and she highly recommends her. she'd had a few other mw's before her, with previous pregnancies (this was her seventh baby), and she says that michelle was her favorite.

ETA: Yes, she is a Christian.

I love Gerri Ryan. She attended me at my last two homebirths and is very hands off. I have also had a little experience with Vikki Gervais. My last baby went breech at 38 weeks and so my midwife consulted with her because of her experience with breech birth. I had an appointment with her and my midwife together to attempt to gently turn the baby vertex, but luckily by that appointment she had turned on her own. If she had remained breech both Vikki and Gerri would have attended the birth. They are both wonderful! They could also steer you in the right direction with the names of other midwives. They are a pretty tight community of midwives down here. Good luck.

I had Gerri Ryan about 2 1/2 years ago. I really liked her and she is very hands off. I'm not sure about religious faith...

are you on the San Diego Natural Families yahoo group? there is a list of HB midwives with their contact info, and lots of HB mamas (local) on the group.

Hi!

I used San Diego Midwife. LaShel and Jamin are very friendly!! They attended my 4th baby's birth. They were very hands off. I delivered my baby on my own and was never checked at all. They also attended my sister's birth, a 10.6 lb baby with shoulder dystocia. My sister also bled a lot and passed out. They were very calm and handled everything so well. I am not sure of their faith...but they were wonderful!!
